Topological changes accompanying the phase transitions in AOT-water binary system in the presence of a strongly binding counter-ion

Md Arif Kamal et al.

Summary: Self-assembly of amphiphiles in aqueous solution leads to various liquid crystalline phases with different symmetries, involving strong topological changes during transitions. By studying the AOT-p-toluidine hydrochloride (PTHC)-water ternary system, insights into the transformation of building blocks between different liquid crystalline phases during phase transitions have been gained, with small-angle X-ray diffraction revealing the dominance of diffuse scattering and its relation to fluctuations and topology changes.

Structural Insights into Self-Assembled Aerosol-OT Aggregates in Aqueous Media Using Atomistic Molecular Dynamics

Anuradha Bhat et al.

Summary: This study investigates the self-assembly of AOT in water using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, revealing different aggregate structures at varying concentrations and temperatures that agree with experimental observations. Individual aggregates were identified using graph theory, and structural metrics showed how shapes and sizes of AOT aggregates vary with surfactant concentration and temperature. These simulations offer insight into unresolved questions in the scientific community and provide a method to generate physics-based micelle structures to rationalize experimental findings.

Electroferrofluids with nonequilibrium voltage-controlled magnetism, diffuse interfaces, and patterns

Tomy Cherian et al.

Summary: It has been recognized that driving matter to nonequilibrium states can lead to emergent behaviors and functionalities. By experimentally driving colloidal dispersions into dissipative nonuniform states with emerging behaviors, novel nonequilibrium magnetism can be achieved, including voltage-controlled magnetization and susceptibility, along with novel dissipative patterns. This concept can be generalized to create various functional responses in other colloids beyond voltage-controlled magnetism.
