Candida glabrata Hst1-Rfm1-Sum1 complex evolved to control virulence-related genes

Norma Vazquez-Francoa et al.

Summary: C. glabrata is an opportunistic fungal pathogen with strong resistance to oxidative stress, adhesion ability, and high resistance to xenobiotics. The HRS-C complex, consisting of Hst1, Sum1, and Rfm1, controls its resistance to oxidative stress, xenobiotics, and adherence to epithelial cells. Sum1 has diverged functionally to control a set of genes related to virulence.

The Lysine Demethylases KdmA and KdmB Differently Regulate Asexual Development, Stress Response, and Virulence in Aspergillus fumigatus

Yong-Ho Choi et al.

Summary: Histone demethylases, such as KdmA and KdmB, have opposite roles in growth, conidiation, and virulence in the opportunistic human pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. They play an equal importance in the development of resistance to the guanine nucleotide synthesis inhibitor 6-azauracil.

The Hydrophobin Gene Family Confers a Fitness Trade-off between Spore Dispersal and Host Colonization in Penicillium expansum

Dianiris Luciano-Rosario et al.

Summary: Hydrophobins are amphipathic secreted proteins uniquely found in filamentous fungi, playing an important role in mediating fungal interactions with their environments. Hydrophobins facilitate spore dispersal, but their function in fungal biology and virulence remains elusive. This study deleted all putative hydrophobin genes in P. expansum and found that the septuple-deletion mutant showed a fitness advantage in competitive pathogenicity tests on apple. These findings suggest a functional trade-off between dispersal and host colonization in P. expansum hydrophobins.

The KdmB-EcoA-RpdA-SntB chromatin complex binds regulatory genes and coordinates fungal development with mycotoxin synthesis

Betim Karahoda et al.

Summary: This study describes a chromatin binding complex KERS in the fungus Aspergillus nidulans, consisting of H3K4 histone demethylase KdmB, cohesin acetyltransferase EcoA, histone deacetylase RpdA, and histone reader/E3 ligase protein SntB. The KERS complex exerts promoter-specific transcriptional effects at active core promoters.

Carbon Catabolite Repression in Filamentous Fungi Is Regulated by Phosphorylation of the Transcription Factor CreA

Leandro Jose de Assis et al.

Summary: This study identified phosphorylation sites on Aspergillus nidulans CreA, which play crucial roles in regulating CCR, enzyme activities, and carbohydrate metabolism. These phosphorylation sites are potential targets for biotechnological strain engineering to improve enzyme production.

Targeted disruption of hir1 alters the transcriptional expression pattern of putative lignocellulolytic genes in the white-rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus

Hongli Wu et al.

Summary: Mutational analysis of a mutant with decreased lignin-degrading ability in P. ostreatus revealed that a mutation in the hir1 gene encoding a histone chaperone altered the expression pattern of ligninolytic genes. This suggests that hir1 plays a critical role in regulating lignocellulolytic genes in P. ostreatus.
