Trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in the surface sediments from Sanya River, China: Distribution, sources and ecological risk

Mengke Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution status and potential ecological risk of trace metals, PAHs, and PCBs in surface sediments of Sanya River in China. The results showed that the sediments had minimal pollution and low ecological risk for trace metals. The detected pollution of PAHs and PCBs may not have significant adverse effects on the ecological environment in the foreseeable future. The overall quality of surface sediments in Sanya River does not appear to pose a serious pollution and ecological risk.

Shale gas wastewater geochemistry and impact on the quality of surface water in Sichuan Basin

Yunyan Ni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the disposal and treatment of shale gas wastewater in central China. The results show that the treatment process can effectively reduce the salt and contaminant levels, and the discharged water meets the safety standards. The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring the water quality of treated wastewater and implementing comprehensive measures to protect public health and the environment.

Combining eDNA and morphological approaches to reveal the impacts of long-term discharges of shale gas wastewaters on receiving waters

Shangbo Zhou et al.

Summary: This study assessed the potential threats of shale gas wastewater discharges to a small river through chemical analyses and biomonitoring. The results showed that the concentrations of certain chemicals increased at the discharge site but decreased considerably downstream. The discharges had limited impacts on the benthic invertebrate community structure, as indicated by both morphological and environmental DNA approaches. The multimetric index analysis also showed no significant difference between upstream and downstream sites.

Spatial distribution, ecological risk and sources of heavy metals in soils from a typical economic development area, Southeastern China

Qiumei Wu et al.

Summary: The study examined the distribution, ecological risk, and sources of heavy metals in soils in a typical coastal economic development area in Southeastern China. Industrial and residential soils showed higher enrichment of heavy metals compared to agricultural and fallow soils, with industrial emissions being the major driving factor.

Water-sediment interactions and mobility of heavy metals in aquatic environments

Lorena S. Miranda et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the mineralogical composition of sediments plays a crucial role in the adsorption and desorption of heavy metals. Particulate organic matter is the most influential nutrient in heavy metals adsorption in riverine environments, while particulate phosphorus is more significant in estuarine conditions. Dissolved nutrients do not have a significant positive effect on the release of heavy metals in riverine areas, but dissolved phosphorus increases the transfer of specific metals from sediments to overlying water in estuarine conditions.
