Retinoic acid influences the timing and scaling of avian wing development

Holly Stainton et al.

Summary: This article examines the timing of embryonic development in different species and finds that development is faster in quails. Through graft experiments, it is discovered that retinoic acid signaling can reset developmental timing. Although the growth rates are comparable between species, the pace of development primarily affects the expansion of skeletal patterns. The widespread distribution of retinoic acid may coordinate developmental timing throughout the embryo.

Time-sequenced transcriptomes of developing distal mouse limb buds: A comparative tissue layer analysis

Marc Fernandez-Guerrero et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the transcriptomes of distal limb mesenchymal progenitors and ectodermal cells, revealing specific transcriptional signatures for different developmental stages. Genes with previously unnoticed roles in limb development were identified, along with signaling pathways enriched between different layers.

Cross-species comparisons and in vitro models to study tempo in development and homeostasis

Teresa Rayon et al.

Summary: Time plays a crucial role in biological processes by determining the sequence and speed of events. Refining methods to measure time in biological systems and understanding the factors that control development pace are ongoing challenges. Comparing biological processes across species offers molecular insights into timekeeping mechanisms, while studying cell-autonomous control and temporal mechanisms within tissues using in vitro systems can provide valuable information for tissue transplantation, homeostasis, and lifespan research.
