Evaluation of algaecide effectiveness of five different oxidants applied on harmful phytoplankton

Javier Moreno-Andres et al.

Summary: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal areas impact ecosystems and human health. This study evaluates the effectiveness of different emerging biocides for disinfecting ballast water and compares them with conventional chlorination methods. The results suggest that using H2O2, peracetic acid (PAA), or peroxymonosulfate (PMS) can be a feasible alternative to chlorine-based reagents for inhibiting the growth of harmful phytoplankton.

Microbial community dynamics in a commercial RAS for production of Atlantic salmon fry (Salmo salar)

Stine Wiborg Dahle et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of microbial communities in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) over a 20-month period. The results show that the production batches, disinfection processes, and flow rate can influence the composition and dynamics of the water microbiota. UV treatment can efficiently reduce bacterial density without compromising the water quality.

Inactivation of fungal spores in water with peracetic acid: Efficiency and mechanism

Jie Zuo et al.

Summary: In recent years, peracetic acid (PAA) has been widely used in sewage disinfection due to its strong sterilizing capacity. This study illustrated the inactivation efficiency and mechanism of Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus by PAA, showing that pH and humic acid concentration negatively affected the inactivation efficiency, while temperature had a positive effect. The inactivation of fungi by PAA was attributed to the penetration of cell membranes, and PAA was found to be effective but less so compared to traditional disinfectants such as Cl2 and ClO2.

Acute dose-response exposure of a peracetic acid-based disinfectant to Atlantic salmon parr reared in recirculating aquaculture systems

Vasco C. Mota et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of acute PAA exposure on Atlantic salmon parr, finding that the no-observed-effect concentration for PAA should be below 1.6 mg/L. The toxicity of PAA-based disinfectants is influenced by their acidified nature, which may interfere with the water pH in low alkalinity aquaculture systems. Further research is needed to assess the long-term health and welfare consequences of PAA exposure in Atlantic salmon parr.

Microbiome response to foam fractionation and ozonation in RAS

Sanni L. Aalto et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of ozone treatment and foam fractionation, alone and combined, on the microbiology of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with rainbow trout. The results showed that foam fractionation had minimal effects on microbial abundance and overall community composition. In contrast, ozone treatment had a significant impact on microbial abundance and composition in both free-living and biofilm communities. Combining the two methods did not provide any additional benefits compared to ozone treatment alone. Additionally, foam fractionation led to changes in the nitrifying microbial community in the biofilm. Overall, the results suggest that these two water treatment methods have different mechanisms and may yield different outcomes under long-term application.

Effect of biocarrier material on nitrification performance during start-up in freshwater RAS

Sanni L. Aalto et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of biocarriers made of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) in recirculating aquaculture systems. The results showed that PP biocarriers had a shorter maturation time and higher removal rates for total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite-nitrogen (NO2--N) compared to PE biocarriers. Pigmentation level had minimal effect on nitrification.

Foam fractionation and ozonation in freshwater recirculation aquaculture systems

Summary: The study demonstrates that foam fractionation and ozonation applied separately or in combination in freshwater recirculating aquaculture systems can significantly improve water quality by reducing organic matter and bacterial loads, enhancing treatment efficiency.

Selected Mechanistic Aspects of Viral Inactivation by Peracetic Acid

Bradley W. Schmitz et al.

Summary: The study found that PAA effectively inactivates viruses by targeting susceptible amino acids on capsid proteins, while having little impact on viral genomes. Viruses with higher total number of target amino acids in their capsid structures may be more susceptible to PAA reactions.

Survey findings of disinfection strategies at selected Norwegian and North American land-based RAS facilities: A comparative insight

Carlo C. Lazado et al.

Summary: Disinfection is crucial in aquaculture, but there is a lack of documentation on practices. Survey of Atlantic salmon recirculation aquaculture facilities in Norway and North America revealed differences in disinfectant selection and standards. Information will be valuable for developing robust and comprehensive disinfection strategies in the future.
