High-Throughput Screening of Aperiodic Superlattices Based on Atomistic Simulation-Informed Effective Medium Theory and Genetic Algorithm

Shangchao Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified effective medium theory is established to predict the thermal conductivity of Si/Ge superlattices (SLs). A combination of this theory and the genetic algorithm enables high-throughput screening of a large number of SL structures. The results show that the thermal conductivity of ap-SLs can be reduced to 1.5 W/(m·K), providing guidance for the design of micron-scale and heterogeneous SLs.

Review of thermal transport in phononic crystals

Masahiro Nomura et al.

Summary: Thermal transport at the nanoscale level has attracted attention due to its physically interesting features such as the behavior of phonons and its potential applications in heat dissipation problems. Researchers have studied the thermal transport properties of various nanostructured materials, including phononic crystals. Phononic crystals provide a well-defined platform for investigating thermal transport. Controlling thermal transport through interference is also an interesting aspect.

Thermoelectric Metamaterials: Nano-Waveguides for Thermoelectric Energy Conversion and Heat Management at the Nanoscale

Xanthippi Zianni

Summary: The use of metamaterials for thermoelectrics was proposed a decade ago, showing enhanced thermoelectric effects and decreased thermal conduction due to quantum interference and geometrically induced fluctuations. Electron and phonon transport properties of thermoelectric metamaterials in the quantum confinement regime are explored, demonstrating potential for high thermoelectric efficiency. Geometric modulation of electron and phonon properties provides strategies for designing materials with controlled heat conduction and enhanced thermoelectric properties.

Optimizing thermal transport in graphene nanoribbon based on phonon resonance hybridization

Xiao Wan et al.

Summary: In this study, phonon transport optimization in graphene nanoribbon was achieved by designing nanopillared nanostructures based on resonance hybridization. It was found that thermal conductance decreases non-monotonically with an increase in the number of nanopillared structures, blocking phonon transport. Insights into controlling phonon transport in nanostructures were provided through mode-analysis, calculations, and simulations.

Non-Fourier phonon heat conduction at the microscale and nanoscale

Gang Chen

Summary: Phonon heat conduction at the microscale and nanoscale exhibits complex phenomena beyond the traditional predictions of Fourier's law, attracting wide attention. The development in studying phonon heat conduction phenomena reveals that besides classical size effects, other novel phenomena have emerged, often occurring at microscale and nanoscale, or only at elevated temperatures.

Maximization and minimization of interfacial thermal conductance by modulating the mass distribution of the interlayer

Lina Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates how interfacial thermal conductance is influenced by modulating the mass distribution of the interlayer in a one-dimensional atomic chain, providing insights into optimizing and designing thermal conductance at the interface. The research shows that the mass distribution corresponding to maximum thermal conductance is not a simple linear or exponential function, but rather resembles a sinusoidal curve around a linear distribution for thicker interlayers. Additionally, abnormal results are explained through analysis of phonon transmission spectra and density of states.
