High-intensity interval training in cardiac rehabilitation: a multi-centre randomized controlled trial

Gordon McGregor et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the clinical effectiveness and safety of low-volume high-intensity interval training (HIIT) compared with moderate-intensity steady-state (MISS) exercise training in patients with coronary artery disease. The results showed that low-volume HIIT improved cardiorespiratory fitness more than MISS and had a higher safety profile. Therefore, low-volume HIIT can be considered as an important adjunct or alternative to MISS in cardiac rehabilitation programs.

HRV-Guided Training for Elders after Stroke: A Protocol for a Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial

Maria Carrasco-Poyatos et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and HRV-guided training on patients who have had a stroke, as well as assess the feasibility, safety, and adherence of an 8-week cardiac rehabilitation program. It is expected that the HRV-guided training protocol will improve functional performance in stroke patients and provide a safer, more feasible, and adherent strategy compared to HIIT, optimizing cardiac rehabilitation interventions.

Heart Rate Variability-Guided Training for Improving Mortality Predictors in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Agustin Manresa-Rocamora et al.

Summary: This research found that HRV-guided training is more effective in improving vagal-related HRV in coronary artery disease patients. Regardless of the training method, exercise training can decrease resting heart rate, increase heart rate recovery, and improve maximum oxygen uptake.

Effects of different exercise interventions on heart rate variability and cardiovascular health factors in older adults: a systematic review

Bernhard Grassler et al.

Summary: This systematic review summarized the effects of different exercise modalities on resting HRV and secondary health factors in healthy older adults aged 60 years and over. Endurance, coordinative, and multimodal training showed positive effects on cardiac autonomic control, while resistance training did not. All types of physical interventions improved secondary health factors.

Heart Rate Variability-Guided Training for Enhancing Cardiac-Vagal Modulation, Aerobic Fitness, and Endurance Performance: A Methodological Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Agustin Manresa-Rocamora et al.

Summary: The systematic review found that HRV-guided training may be more effective than predefined training for maintaining and improving vagal-mediated HRV, with less likelihood of negative responses. However, the margin of superiority in group-level improvements in fitness and performance between HRV-guided and predefined training is small. Further research is needed to explore optimal methodological practices related to HRV index selection and recording in training programs.

Summary: Cardiac rehabilitation training can effectively improve the patient's cardiac function indicators and self-care ability, and reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, large-sample, multicenter, and long-term RCTs are needed to strengthen the findings of the study.
