Highly Distorted Multiple Helicenes: Syntheses, Structural Analyses, and Properties

Hsiao-Ci Huang et al.

Summary: A series of hexapole helicenes (HHs) and nonuple helicenes (NHs) were synthesized from 1,3,5-tris[2-(arylethynyl)-phenyl]benzene through iodocyclization and palladium-catalyzed annulation. These helicenes exhibited unique structural features and were resolved into their enantiomers. The relative potential energies of their diastereomers were predicted using density functional theory calculations and structural considerations.

Helicity-modulated remote C-H functionalization

Na Yang et al.

Summary: Remote C-H functionalization is an important process for the conversion and utilization of arenes. A metal/template-free electrochemical strategy is developed for remote C-H functionalization in a helical system, where hydrogen atoms act as directing groups to facilitate alkoxylation. This strategy allows precise decoration of inert helicene skeletons with various alkoxy pendants. Selective decoration of a methoxy group on N-methylated aza[6]helicene leads to distinct luminescence variation upon changing solvents.

Overcrowded Triply Fused Carbo[7]helicene

Albert Artigas et al.

Summary: This paper presents the synthesis and analysis of a highly contorted and doubly negatively curved multihelicene compound, made up of three carbo[7]helicene units fused within a central six-membered ring. The compound was synthesized through a [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of 13,14-picyne using a superior Ni(0) catalyst. The evaluation of aromaticity in this triple carbo[7]helicene challenged the limitations of Clar's model of aromaticity.

C-H Acyloxylation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Yota Sakakibara et al.

Summary: The paper describes the C-H acyloxylation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which involves the construction of aryl acyloxylate scaffolds from PAHs using equimolar hypervalent iodine compounds. Interestingly, the reaction is accelerated by blue light irradiation. Additionally, the authors achieved the synthesis of structurally new symmetric and unsymmetric diaroyloxylated fluoranthenes with a ruthenium photoredox catalyst.

Chiroptical Properties of Symmetric Double, Triple, and Multiple Helicenes

Tadashi Mori

Summary: This review focuses on the chiroptical properties of multiple helicenes, with an emphasis on the impact of the arrangement of multiple helices on the chiroptical responses. Although the number of multiple helicenes reported is limited, insights into the design principle for advanced chiroptical materials through the proper arrangement of multiple helices are provided.

Visualizing electron delocalization in contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Albert Artigas et al.

Summary: The electron delocalization in contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules was studied using 3D isotropic magnetic shielding (IMS) contour maps. The visualization of preferred electron circuits allowed for understanding of the local and global aromaticity patterns in the molecules. The differences in delocalization patterns between different faces of the electron circuits and diastereomeric chiral PAHs were clearly observed.
