UniProt: the Universal Protein Knowledgebase in 2023

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide comprehensive, high-quality, and freely accessible protein sequences annotated with functional information. The database has expanded its data processing pipeline and website to accommodate the increasing information content, with over 227 million sequences and plans to include a reference proteome for each taxonomic group. Detailed annotations are extracted from the literature to update or create reviewed entries, while unreviewed entries are supplemented with annotations from automated systems. The new website, https://www.uniprot.org/, offers enhanced user experience and easy access to data, including AlphaFold structures and improved protein subcellular localization visualizations.

Accurate detection of enzymatic degradation processes of gelatin-alginate microcapsule by 1H NMR spectroscopy: Probing biodegradation mechanism and kinetics

Uyen Thi Do et al.

Summary: In this study, biodegradable microcapsules were synthesized using a complex coacervation approach and the enzyme-induced decomposition mechanisms were proposed by observing spectral changes in proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) analyses. The chemical structure, morphology, and size distribution of the synthesized capsules were confirmed using additional analytical techniques. The degradation of the microcapsules was investigated using targeted enzymes, revealing feasible determination of the degradation rate constant and suggesting enzyme-specific 4-stage degradation mechanisms.

Trace metal sorption on nanoplastics: An innovative analytical approach combining surface analysis and mass spectrometry techniques

Antoine Aynard et al.

Summary: The mass and volume concentration of nanoplastics are low, but their surface area is high, which can increase their toxicity by adsorbing chemical co-pollutants such as trace metals. This study investigated the interactions between carboxylated nanoplastics and copper, and confirmed that nanoplastics can act as carriers for metal pollutants through both adsorption and absorption processes.

Recent advances in the research on effects of micro/nanoplastics on carbon conversion and carbon cycle: A review

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: Mass production and widespread use of plastics have led to the accumulation of plastics in the environment, increasing the proportion of carbon storage in these polymers. Microplastics affect carbon conversion and cycle by interfering with biological fixation of CO2, microbial structure and community, functional enzyme activity, gene expression, and local environment. Plastic pollution can also impact the blue carbon ecosystem and its ability to store CO2 and fix marine carbon. However, limited information is available to fully understand the mechanisms involved. Further research is needed to explore the effects of microplastics and derived organic carbon on the carbon cycle under multiple impacts. The relationship between plastic pollution, blue carbon ecosystem, and global climate change should also be established in a timely manner. This work provides a valuable perspective for future studies on the impact of microplastics on the carbon cycle.
