Purification of Carrier-Free 47Sc of Biomedical Interest: Selective Separation Study from natCa(n,γ)

Ahmed M. Shahr M. El-Din et al.

Summary: Sc-47 for theranostic medical applications was obtained through neutron activation of natural calcium target and separated from Ca-47 using liquid-liquid extraction with Cyanex 272 ((2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid) as the extractant. Various extraction parameters including extraction time, pH, metal ion concentrations, extractant concentration, diluent type, and phase ratio were investigated for their effects on extraction efficiency and separation of the two radionuclides. The proposed procedure achieved a 90% extraction yield for Sc-47 radioisotope with a fast separation time of 10 min, at pH 1.8 (0.01 M HCl), and with low E (1%) for Ca-47 and high separation factors. The loaded Sc-47 isotope was stripped with 99.2% efficiency using 0.4 M oxalic acid solution with a purity of 99.9%.

Evaluation of two extraction chromatography resins for scandium and titanium separation for medical isotope production

Derek R. McLain et al.

Summary: Sc-47 is a radioactive medical isotope used for cancer detection and treatment, and efficient separation methods for scandium from titanium are being researched to reduce costs and enable recycling. This study focuses on evaluating commercially available diglycolamide-based and hydroxamate-based extraction chromatography resins for their sorption of Sc-47 and Ti under varying acid concentrations.

Study of 99Mo and long-lived impurities produced through (p, x) reactions in the natMo

Arshiya Anees Ahmed et al.

Summary: Excitation functions for (p, x) reactions on a natMo target were measured using the stack-foil activation technique. In addition to medically important radioisotopes, other long-lived radio-impurities produced in the target were studied. The cross sections of all produced radioisotopes from natMo(p, x) reactions were compared to literature data and showed good agreement.

Cyclotron Production and Separation of Scandium Radionuclides from Natural Titanium Metal and Titanium Dioxide Targets

C. Shaun Loveless et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a robust method for the cyclotron production of scandium radionuclides that could be used with natural or enriched TiO2 target material. The efficiency and recovery rates for titanium and scandium were high, showing the potential for reliable production of these radionuclides for theranostic applications. The study highlights the importance of using matched-pair radionuclides to ensure identical chemistries and pharmacologic profiles in theranostic agents.

Production of scandium radionuclides for theranostic applications: towards standardization of quality requirements

R. Mikolajczak et al.

Summary: Scandium radionuclides have attracted significant interest in the field of precision medicine, allowing for personalized adjustment of radiation characteristics to optimize medical care or therapeutic benefit, particularly for specific patient groups. The radionuclides of scandium, including Sc-43/44 as positron emitters and Sc-47 as beta-radiation emitter, seem to be a suitable theranostic pair. This paper reviews the production, coordination chemistry, radiolabeling, preclinical studies, and initial clinical studies of scandium isotopes, proposing standardized procedures for scandium-based radiopharmaceuticals to pave the way for potential Ph.Eur. monographs.
