Preparation and antibacterial properties of curcumin-loaded cyclodextrin-grafted chitosan hydrogel

Pei Yan Hao et al.

Summary: In this study, the β-cyclodextrin-grafted chitosan/glycerophosphate (CD-g-CS/GP) hydrogels were successfully synthesized and exhibited great potential for the controlled release of hydrophobic drugs. The hydrogels had a short gelation time, superior injection performance, suitable swelling behavior, and enhanced solubility and bioavailability of curcumin. Furthermore, the hydrogels showed good hemocompatibility and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Multilayered Curcumin-Loaded Hydrogel Microcarriers with Antimicrobial Function

Weronika Szczesna et al.

Summary: The study developed multilayered hydrogel microcarriers with multiple functionalities and successfully loaded them with chemotherapeutic curcumin (CUR). The surface of the microcarriers was coated with antimicrobial functionalized polyelectrolytes using the layer-by-layer technique. The functional layers exhibited good viscoelastic properties, and the release of the drug from the microcarriers followed a hybrid model. Furthermore, the antimicrobial activity of the functionalized microcarriers against Staphylococcus aureus and Serratia marcescens was significantly enhanced.

Induction of Reactive Oxygen Species Is Necessary for Efficient Onset of Cyprinid Herpesvirus 2 Replication: Implications for Novel Antiviral Strategy With Antioxidants

Cuiyu Lu et al.

Summary: This study found that CyHV-2 infection induces an increase in intracellular ROS during early infection, but excessive accumulation of ROS is ameliorated during late infection. The antioxidants EGCG and BBH effectively inhibit the amplification of CyHV-2 and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation. The modulation of intracellular ROS production by regulating gene expression plays a role in controlling the replication of CyHV-2.

Thermoresponsive in situ gel of curcumin loaded solid lipid nanoparticle: Design, optimization and in vitro characterization

Mukta Agrawal et al.

Summary: Curcumin has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, amyloid inhibition, and neuroprotective properties, but its poor solubility, lipophilicity, rapid metabolism, and short half-life limit its efficacy in treating AD. This study developed curcumin-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (CSL) to improve the physicochemical properties and achieved prolonged release. However, the loading reduced the antioxidant potency of curcumin.

Summary: This study utilized small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) to enhance the stability and efficacy of berberine hydrochloride (BRB). The results showed that sEVs loaded with BRB had greater inhibitory effects on proliferation, migration, and capillary-like formation in tumor cells and endothelial cells compared to free BRB. Therefore, sEV-loaded BRB may be considered as an innovative delivery method to prevent tumorigenesis and angiogenesis.
