The detection of cervical neoplasia via optical imaging: a pilot clinical study

Summary: A new high-resolution imaging system based on increased vessel density of cervical tissue was developed for the early diagnosis of cervical neoplasia. A pilot study with 45 patients who underwent colposcopy and biopsy showed that the system achieved a high accuracy rate of 97.8% with 80% sensitivity and 100% specificity in differentiating between normal and HSIL lesions.

Barriers to uptake of cervical cancer screening services in low-and-middle-income countries: a systematic review

Summary: This systematic review examines the barriers to cervical cancer screening among women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The study identifies various barriers at individual, cultural, societal, health system, and structural levels, including lack of knowledge, cultural and religious restrictions, social misconceptions, and limited access to health services. The findings highlight the importance of implementing clear policies, improving health system capacity, advocating and disseminating information, addressing gender norms, and conducting further research to address the inequitable burden of cervical cancer in LMICs.

Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
