The role of yielding cameras in pedestrian-vehicle interactions at un-signalized crosswalks: An application of game theoretical model

Who goes first? A distributed simulator study of vehicle-pedestrian interaction

Summary: One of the current challenges in automation is to ensure effective communication and reaction between highly automated vehicles (HAVs) and pedestrians in order to build trust. In this study, we replicated vehicle-pedestrian interactions through a combination of a high fidelity motion-based driving simulator and a CAVE-based pedestrian lab. By studying 64 participants in different scenarios, we found that kinematic cues have a stronger influence on crossing outcomes than psychological traits like sensation seeking and social value orientation. The experimental paradigm used in this study allowed for repeated observations, resulting in behaviors consistent with naturalistic studies.

Driver Modeling Through Deep Reinforcement Learning and Behavioral Game Theory

Summary: Evidence accumulation models of decision-making propose that humans accumulate noisy sensory evidence over time up to a decision threshold. We demonstrate that this type of model can describe human behavior well not only in abstract, semi-static laboratory tasks, but also in a task that is relevant to human movement in the real world. Specifically, we show that a model directly accumulating the continuously time-varying visual looming (optical expansion) of an approaching obstacle explains full probability distributions of when humans can detect this collision threat. Using electroencephalography, we find indications that this type of evidence is accumulated differently in the brain compared to evidence accumulation in previously studied, more abstract tasks.

Evaluating pedestrian interaction preferences with a game theoretic autonomous vehicle in virtual reality
