Effects of glepaglutide, a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-2 analog, on intestinal morphology and perfusion in patients with short bowel syndrome: Findings from a randomized phase 2 trial

Rahim M. Naimi et al.

Summary: Glepaglutide, a long-acting GLP-2 analog, improved intestinal absorptive function by increasing plasma citrulline levels and morphological improvements. However, there were no significant changes in intestinal perfusion after three weeks of treatment.

Novel therapeutic targets for cholestatic and fatty liver disease

Michael Trauner et al.

Summary: Cholestatic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease have shared pathophysiological mechanisms that can be targeted for intervention through novel therapeutic concepts. Nuclear receptors play a crucial role in the treatment of these diseases, with high affinity therapeutic ligands being developed for specific or multiple isoforms. In addition, other therapeutic approaches targeting inflammation and fibrosis directly are also available. Combination strategies that target metabolic disturbances, inflammation, and fibrosis may be necessary for successful treatment of these complex disorders.

Ring Trial on Quantitative Assessment of Bile Acids Reveals a Method- and Analyte-Specific Accuracy and Reproducibility

Sven-Bastiaan Haange et al.

Summary: This study compares and harmonizes methodologies for quantification of bile acids, including primary and secondary bile acids, in different samples. The results show that measurement of hydrophobic bile acids is the most challenging, but the quality assessments are generally similar, and data from chosen locations can be used for comparisons between studies.

NR4A1 inhibits the epithelial-mesenchymal transition of hepatic stellate cells: Involvement of TGF-β-Smad2/3/4-ZEB signaling

Qian Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that NR4A1 activation suppresses hepatic stellate cell activation and liver fibrosis by inhibiting acetaldehyde-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), possibly involving the inhibition of the TGF-β-Smad2/3/4-ZEB signaling pathway.

Human gastrointestinal epithelia of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum resolved at single-cell resolution

Georg A. Busslinger et al.

Summary: The upper gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, controls different functions such as food transport, digestion, and hormone production. Through single-cell analysis, distinct cell types have been identified in these organs, with specific populations like quiescent stem/progenitor cells and rare BCHE cells in the esophagus and duodenum respectively. Gene expression varies significantly between identical cell types in different organs, and there are unique cell types like serotonin-producing enterochromaffin cells and histamine-producing enterochromaffin-like cells that express additional hormones such as luteinizing hormone.
