Extreme Smog Challenge of India Intensified by Increasing Lower Tropospheric Stability

Ritesh Gautam et al.

Summary: Extreme smog in India during late autumn and winter months heavily affects air quality. While the links between emissions, air quality, and health impacts are well-known, the association of smog and its intensification with climatic trends in the lower troposphere, where aerosol pollution and its radiative effects occur, is not well-understood. This study, using long-term satellite data, demonstrates a significant increase in aerosol exceedances over northern India in the past two decades, leading to sustained atmospheric warming and surface cooling trends. The findings indicate a multidecadal strengthening of lower tropospheric stability and an increase in relative humidity, both of which contribute to a more than fivefold increase in poor visibility days. Understanding this crucial aerosol-radiation-meteorological feedback driving smog intensification can inform mitigation strategies for stronger and region-wide measures, which are vital for solving India's smog challenge.

Heating and lighting: understanding overlooked energy-consumption activities in the Indian residential sector

Chimurkar Navinya et al.

Summary: Understanding the climate impact of residential emissions requires determining fuel consumption for household activities. While cooking emissions have been studied extensively, non-cooking energy consumption activities like heating and lighting in residential sectors have been overlooked due to a lack of national-level data. This study uses data from the COALESCE project, which conducted surveys across 6000 households in India, to understand the energy consumed by non-cooking residential activities. Regression models were developed to estimate information in non-surveyed areas using demographic, housing, and meteorological data. The results show that non-cooking activities account for a significant portion of energy consumption in residential areas, with biomass being the primary fuel source for heating and lighting.

Residential heating emissions (can) exceed paddy-residue burning emissions in rural northwest India

Harshita Pawar et al.

Summary: This study reports the particulate matter concentration in Nadampur village, Sangrur district, using low-cost PM sensors, and finds that burning of paddy residue and residential heating emissions are the main contributors to poor air quality. The impact of paddy residue burning on air quality is higher than harvesting activities but lower than residential heating emissions. Heating-related emissions have a longer-lasting impact on air quality.

Will open waste burning become India's largest air pollution source?

Gaurav Sharma et al.

Summary: India has made progress in addressing indoor air pollution, but still faces challenges with outdoor air quality, mainly caused by residential fuel use. The country's renewable energy policies are expected to reduce emissions in some industries in the mid-term, however, emissions from open waste burning have remained largely unchanged.

Seasonal variability and source apportionment of non-methane VOCs using PTR-TOF-MS measurements in Delhi, India

Vaishali Jain et al.

Summary: This study characterized VOCs in Delhi using the PTR-TOF-MS and performed source apportionment analysis using the PMF model. Traffic emissions, solid fuel combustion, and secondary VOCs were found to be the major sources, while biogenic sources were significant during certain seasons.

Replacing the greater evil: Can legalizing decentralized waste burning in improved devices reduce waste burning emissions for improved air quality?

Pooja Chaudhary et al.

Summary: Open waste burning is a significant source of air pollution in India, impacting human health. This study examines the potential of reducing health-relevant emissions by legalizing the burning of dry non-biodegradable waste in improved devices. Results show that substituting traditional fuels with dry plastic waste can significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality.

GLOVOCS - Master compound assignment guide for proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry users

A. M. Yanez-Serrano et al.

Summary: The study created a master compound assignment guide called GLOVOCS to facilitate the research of multiple groups using PTR-MS to monitor VOCs and understand the mechanisms underlying their production and impact. Users can access and contribute to the identification of VOCs through the collaborative tool, aiming to provide evidence of biogenic or anthropogenic VOC origin and chemotaxonomic classification of compounds. Further cross-validation is highly recommended when using PTR-MS techniques.

Season-wise analyses of VOCs, hydroxyl radicals and ozone formation chemistry over north-west India reveal isoprene and acetaldehyde as the most potent ozone precursors throughout the year

Vinod Kumar et al.

Summary: The north-west Indo-Gangetic Plain in India is a major cereal-producing region with concerns about surface ozone pollution. This study conducted year-long measurements of VOCs and other atmospheric components, finding that ozone production is strongly influenced by both VOCs and NOx, rather than just NOx as previously thought. Isoprene and acetaldehyde were identified as significant contributors to ozone formation in all seasons, highlighting the need for monitoring and controlling these emissions to mitigate surface ozone pollution in this important region.

Gridded 1 km x 1 km emission inventory for paddy stubble burning emissions over north-west India constrained by measured emission factors of 77 VOCs and district-wise crop yield data

Ashish Kumar et al.

Summary: Every post-monsoon season, about 1.7 billion tons of paddy stubble are openly burned in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), emitting significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are not accounted for in existing emission inventories, leading to air quality and climate impacts. Mitigation of this source alone can yield massive air-quality and climate co-benefits for over 500 million people.
