Fatigue behaviour of notched laser powder bed fusion AlSi10Mg after thermal and mechanical surface post-processing

Erfan Maleki et al.

Summary: The study investigated the individual and hybrid effects of T6 heat treatment and shot peening on LPBF V-notched AlSi10Mg specimens, emphasizing the importance of shot peening parameters in surface modification and fatigue strength. The combination of heat treatment and shot peening can effectively mask the presence of the notch, achieving almost the same fatigue strength for notched specimens as un-notched counterparts.

Hybrid thermal, mechanical and chemical surface post-treatments for improved fatigue behavior of laser powder bed fusion AlSi10Mg notched samples

Erfan Maleki et al.

Summary: Complex geometries can be produced using laser powder bed fusion techniques, but the resulting parts have poor surface quality. Post-treatments can greatly improve the performance of these parts. This study investigated the effects of four different post-treatments on the microstructure, surface, and mechanical properties of LPBF AlSi10Mg samples. All post treatments improved the fatigue life, with the combination of treatments leading to the most significant improvement.

Erfan Maleki et al.

Summary: Post-processing methods, such as T6 thermal treatment, laser shock peening, and electrochemical polishing, were investigated for their effects on the properties of laser powder bed fusion materials. It was found that laser shock peening has the potential to close sub-surface pores and, when combined with heat treatment and polishing, significantly improve the fatigue life of the materials.

Residual stress and long fatigue crack growth behaviour of laser powder bed fused Ti6Al4V: Role of build direction

Wenbo Sun et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the laser powder bed fused (LPBF) Ti6Al4V alloy, focusing on the anisotropic fatigue crack growth behavior and the residual stress effects. Compact tension (CT) specimens in different off-axis build directions were designed and manufactured, and the residual stresses of the samples were measured. The fatigue crack paths and fracture surfaces were analyzed and compared. The results show significant differences in residual stress and fatigue crack growth behavior under different conditions, and these differences decrease after post-treatment.

Defects in additive manufactured metals and their effect on fatigue performance: A state-of-the-art review

Niloofar Sanaei et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is emerging as an alternative method for producing unique and complex parts, with fatigue performance being a key consideration. Defects such as Lack of Fusion, porosities, and un-melted particles can affect fatigue performance, but can be minimized through process optimization and post-processing. Analytical techniques can reduce the need for costly fullscale testing for assessing reliability in fatigue performance.

Defect-based fatigue life prediction of L-PBF additive manufactured metals

Niloofar Sanaei et al.

Summary: This work presents a computational framework for predicting the fatigue life of two metal specimens, considering different treatment conditions and defect sizes. Unlike the commonly assumed crack growth mode in the literature, the appropriate crack growth mode based on the observed failure mechanism is used for fatigue life predictions. Good correlations between experimental results and prediction curves are demonstrated by using Extreme Value Statistics and equivalent defect size based on Murakami's method for approximation of the initial defect size.

Effect of processing parameters on overhanging surface roughness during laser powder bed fusion of AlSi10Mg

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: In additive manufacturing, the roughness of overhanging surfaces is influenced by process parameters and build angles without support structures. Contour scanning speed is the most dominant factor affecting surface roughness, with contour process parameters having a greater impact compared to infill process parameters. As build angle increases, the effects of process parameters on surface roughness decrease, requiring a comprehensive consideration of various parameters to achieve smooth surfaces with low roughness.

The effect of defect population on the anisotropic fatigue resistance of AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

Zhengkai Wu et al.

Summary: Metallurgical defects significantly impact the anisotropic fatigue resistance of additively manufactured parts, as shown by X-ray CT analysis of AlSi10Mg alloy processed via laser powder bed fusion. The presence of near surface defects influences the initiation of fatigue cracks, leading to different mechanical performance in specimens loaded parallel and perpendicular to the build direction. Extreme value statistics can be used to predict the defect population in critical regions, aiding in the establishment of a fatigue performance assessment diagram.
