Distribution, risk assessment, and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using positive matrix factorization (PMF) in urban soils of East India

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and sources of PAHs in urban soils from two industrial cities in east India and assessed their health risks to humans. The results showed that HMW PAHs (4-5 rings) were predominant, with major sources of contamination being petroleum combustion, vehicular emissions, biomass, and coal combustion. The health risk assessment indicated some carcinogenic risk for adults, although the cumulative probability of carcinogenic risks was generally within acceptable limits.

Development of an in situ equilibrium polydimethylsiloxane passive sampler for measuring volatile organic compounds in soil vapor

Jae-Kyoung Moon et al.

Summary: An equilibrium passive sampler made of PDMS fiber was developed to measure VOCs in soil vapor. ePTFE was used to protect PDMS from pollution and direct contact with soil components. The equilibrium partition coefficients of VOCs between PDMS, gas, and water were measured.

The Health Risk and Source Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Soil of Industrial Cities in India

Tapan Kumar Sankar et al.

Summary: Industrial areas play a vital role in the urban ecosystem, and the environmental quality of these areas has a direct impact on human health. This study collected and analyzed soil samples from two cities in India to evaluate the sources and potential health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in industrial areas. The results showed that PAH concentrations were higher in Jamshedpur compared to Amravati, and the dominant sources of PAHs were coal and petroleum/oil combustion. The findings highlight the importance of contamination assessment and human health risk evaluation in PAH-contaminated sites in India.

Profiling and assessing soil-air exchange of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in playground dust and soil using ex situ equilibrium passive sampling

Dat Thanh Pham et al.

Summary: Cancer risk is associated with exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in playground dust and soil. This study found that coal combustion and vehicular emissions are the main sources of PAHs, and higher organic carbon content and atmospheric deposition contribute to the accumulation of PAHs.

In Situ Equilibrium Polyethylene Passive Sampling of Soil Gas VOC Concentrations: Modeling, Parameter Determinations, and Laboratory Testing

Philip Gschwend et al.

Summary: The feasibility of using low-density polyethylene (PE) sheets as equilibrium passive soil gas samplers to quantify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in unsaturated subsurface environments was evaluated. The results showed that PE-based measurements can accurately determine VOC concentrations and overcome the problem of overestimating vapor phase concentrations compared to other methods.
