Multi-criteria evaluation of energy recovery from urban wastewater sludges by anaerobic digestion and hydrothermal liquefaction

W. M. L. K. Abeyratne et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the energy recovery from wastewater sludges using the traditional anaerobic digestion pathway and the emerging hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) pathway through a multi-criteria evaluation. Twelve criteria were considered, including process stability, volatile solids reduction, process time, energy recovery, energy yield, net energy yield, energy return on investment, net power yield, energy density of the resulting biofuel, potential for methane emissions, effluent quality, and technology readiness. The HTL pathway outranks both anaerobic pathways when considering all 12 criteria, with a preference ranking of +0.44 compared to -0.28 in anaerobic digestion. It is recommended to develop technologies for recovering energy from the solid residue of HTL to improve the energy return on investment from 1.5 to 2.42.

Ammonia recovery from anaerobic digester centrate using onsite pilot scale bipolar membrane electrodialysis coupled to membrane stripping

Federico Ferrari et al.

Summary: This study investigated ammonia recovery from the centrate of an anaerobic digester. The pilot plant operated with a bipolar-electrodialysis setup coupled to liquid/liquid membrane contactor modules. The results showed that a higher load ratio and continuous current application led to higher ammonia removal efficiency. However, scaling and fouling of the ion exchange membranes limited the operation of the pilot plant. Additionally, the recovered ammonium sulfate product contained traces of a common substitute for legacy PFAS, highlighting the need for careful selection of equipment components to ensure product safety.

Maximizing phosphorus recovery as biofertilizer in an algal wastewater treatment system

I. S. A. Abeysiriwardana-Arachchige et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated an efficient method for recovering energy, nitrogen, and phosphorous from settled sewage using algal biomass through hydrothermal liquefaction. By optimizing parameters such as leaching time, base concentration, liquid:solid ratio, and temperature, over 86% of phosphorous from biochar could be extracted at a cost of $4.54/kg. Additionally, a three-step procedure was developed to recover high-purity biofertilizers from the phosphorous-rich eluate, achieving 95.4% phosphorous recovery at $5.29/kg.
