Updated epidemiology of gastrointestinal cancers in East Asia

Junjie Huang et al.

Summary: Globally, gastrointestinal cancers account for over one-fourth of all cancer incidence and one-third of cancer-related mortality. East Asia has the highest burden of gastrointestinal cancers, including stomach, liver, oesophageal, and gallbladder cancers, which is attributed to population growth, aging, and westernization of lifestyles. The increasing incidence of young-onset colorectal cancer is also observed in East Asia. To effectively reduce the burden of gastrointestinal cancers in this region, efforts should be made to modify unhealthy lifestyles, promote vaccination against hepatitis virus, control infections, increase colorectal cancer screening, enhance early cancer detection, and improve cancer survivorship through organized rehabilitation programs.

A multiphoton transition activated iron based metal organic framework for synergistic therapy of photodynamic therapy/chemodynamic therapy/chemotherapy for orthotopic gliomas

Zhijia Lv et al.

Summary: A multifunctional nanodrug (UMD) consisting of up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) core, NH2-MIL-53 (Fe) shell as a photosensitizer, and a carrier for doxorubicin hydrochloride (Dox) chemotherapy was developed for treating gliomas. Lactoferrin (LF) modification on UMD surface allowed it to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and target cells. The UMD exhibited NIR-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT) through redox reactions, and targeted chemotherapy for effective suppression of orthotopic gliomas.

Engineering nanofusiform Iron-doped polydiaminopyridine boost intratumoral penetration for immunogenic cell Death-mediated synergistic Photothermal/Chemo therapy

Xiaoli Zhang et al.

Summary: The research team synthesized iron-doped poly (2,6-diami-nopyridine) nanoparticles with a fusiform morphology and decorated them with the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin to create a multimodal therapy-based nanosystem. This nanosystem exhibited good photothermal conversion rate and could increase the temperature of tumor sites, leading to immunogenic cell death and tumor cell apoptosis. The release of doxorubicin was also promoted, achieving synergistic photothermal/chemo therapy in a breast tumor animal model.

Multi-enzyme Co-expressed Dual-Atom Nanozymes Induce Cascade Immunogenic Ferroptosis via Activating Interferon-? and Targeting Arachidonic Acid Metabolism

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: Immunotherapy is a promising treatment strategy for tumor regression, but it has low response rates due to the lack of immunogenicity in tumor cells. This study presents a strategy to enhance the immunogenicity of tumor cells by inducing cascade immunogenic tumor ferroptosis. A nanoplatform was developed to trigger lipid peroxidation and activate ACSL4, resulting in irreversible cascade immunogenic ferroptosis. This approach could overcome the limitations of current immunotherapy.

Global burden of gastric cancer: epidemiological trends, risk factors, screening and prevention

Aaron P. Thrift et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a major cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with dynamic temporal trends and different risk factors for its two anatomical subtypes. There have been declines in some regions and demographic groups, but also exceptions of stable or increasing rates. H. pylori infection is an important factor and eradication studies have emerged in recent years. This review highlights the latest trends and addresses gaps in knowledge and public health practice to reduce the global burden of gastric cancer.

Self-Assembled Au/CuS Nanoparticles for Targeted Imaging and Multimodal Therapy of Breast Cancer

Yufei Yang et al.

Summary: With the use of solvent-induced self-assembly technique, we have developed multifunctional nanoparticles for imaging and treatment of breast cancer. These nanoparticles combine the bioimaging ability of gold nanoclusters and the photothermal properties of copper sulfide nanoparticles. By modifying the nanoparticle surfaces with folic acid, the nanoparticles can target folate receptors overexpressed in breast cancer cells. In vitro experiments have shown that these composite nanoparticles have excellent fluorescence imaging ability and a better capability to kill MDA-MB-231 cells than single drug or photothermal treatment alone. This multifunctional system, combining fluorescence imaging, photothermal treatment, and targeted drug delivery, shows great potential for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
