Evaluating the combined effect of climate and anthropogenic stressors on marine coastal ecosystems: Insights from a systematic review of cumulative impact assessment approaches

Christian Simeoni et al.

Summary: Cumulative impacts are increasingly posing threats to marine and coastal ecosystems. Efforts have been made in the research community to design and test various methodological approaches and tools for evaluating the complex interactions among multiple pressures affecting these ecosystems. However, there is a limited implementation of advanced complex system methods for cumulative risk assessment and a lack of integrated approaches and tools for understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of marine and coastal ecosystems' response to multiple pressures.

Physiological and nutritional constraints on zooplankton productivity due to eutrophication and climate change predicted using a resource-based modeling approach

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that zooplankton production is affected by climate change and eutrophication, which could have broad implications for food-web dynamics and fisheries production. A resource-based model developed in this study shows that seasonal variation in resource availability and quality greatly influences zooplankton production, providing important insights for understanding the biophysical control of zooplankton under a changing climate.

Nutrient potentiate the responses of plankton community structure and metabolites to cadmium: A microcosm study

Xue Bai et al.

Summary: This study found that Cd had significant effects on the plankton community structure and function, especially under high nutrient conditions. In terms of plankton structure, Cd consistently decreased Chl a concentration, total phytoplankton, Cyanophyta, and Chlomphyta abundances, as well as Copepoda abundance. In terms of community effects, Cd inhibited the photosystem II activity of phytoplankton community and led to reductions in DOC and pH, especially under high nutrient conditions.

30 years trends of microplastic pollution: Mass-quantitative analysis of archived mussel samples from the North and Baltic Seas

Maurits Halbach et al.

Summary: This study investigates the levels of microplastics (MP) in blue mussels from the North and Baltic Sea over a 30-year period. The research found that MP levels in North Sea samples gradually increased from the 1980s/90s to the 2000s, while MP levels in Baltic Sea samples remained consistently high and stable. The presence of different polymer clusters suggests regional and trans-regional sources of microplastic pollution.

Nanomaterials for microplastic remediation from aquatic environment: Why nano matters?

P. S. Goh et al.

Summary: The contamination of microplastics in aquatic environment is a serious threat to the ecosystem, and efforts are needed to remove them. Current water treatment technologies can partially remove microplastics, but more research is needed to improve the removal efficiency. Nanomaterials show potential in enhancing the removal of microplastics from water environments, and further studies should focus on utilizing nanomaterials to improve the efficiency of microplastic removal.

Summary: This study demonstrates a new method for predicting spatial community reassembly at landscape scales through fitting multiple datasets. Nearshore ecosystems on seabird islands are potentially influenced by invasive predator eradications and environmental conditions: a case study at the Mercury Islands, New Zealand

Summary: Seabirds play a crucial role in island ecosystem function by providing marine-derived nutrients, but invasive predators disrupt this balance. This study found that nearshore macroalgae communities and seabird-derived nitrogen concentrations are influenced by environmental parameters, with never-invaded islands showing higher macroalgal diversity and seabird-derived nitrogen levels.

Physiological Responses of Marine Macroalgae to Chlorine Dioxide Treatment

M. M. El-Sherbiny et al.

Summary: The study showed that the physiological responses of the macroalgae Ulva reticulata and Hypnea musciformis to chlorine dioxide treatment included an initial increase in chlorophyll-a, carotenoid, and total polyphenol content, followed by a decrease. Furthermore, the chlorine dioxide treatment also affected the fatty acids composition of the macroalgae. The results suggest that chlorine dioxide, as an antifouling biocide, has toxic effects on these macroalgae.
