Weifang Liu et al.

Summary: Based on the data from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study database, the global death burden of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) has not substantially decreased. There are significant variations in PAD mortality and its attributable risk factors by different regions, sex, and age groups. Therefore, targeted strategies for managing PAD-related mortality in specific subgroups are needed.

Lead and other elements-based pollution in soil, crops and water near a lead-acid battery recycling factory in Bangladesh

Sazal Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of lead and other elements in soil, crops, and water around a lead-acid battery recycling workshop in southwestern Bangladesh. The results showed excessive concentrations of lead in both soil and crops, and groundwater samples exceeded the WHO guideline values. These findings suggest the need for better management of LAB recycling workshops to prevent lead pollution.

Global magnitude and temporal trends of idiopathic developmental intellectual disability attributable to lead exposure from 1990 to 2019: Results from Global Burden of Disease Study

Tongchao Zhang et al.

Summary: Lead exposure is an important environmental pollutant that can cause idiopathic developmental intellectual disability (IDII). This study assessed the global burden of lead exposure-related IDII using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. The findings showed that the burden of IDII was highest in children and adolescents, as well as in low- and middle-income countries. While most regions and countries experienced a downward trend, 11 countries showed an upward trend.

Blood lead concentration in an urban parrot: Nestling Kaka (Nestor meridionalis) demonstrate evidence of exposure to lead via eggs and parental feeding

Aditi Sriram et al.

Summary: Lead exposure in urban Kaka population was studied in this research. Blood samples from 139 nestlings were examined for lead concentrations, revealing that 36.7% of nestlings showed evidence of lead exposure. The exposure pattern suggested that lead was transferred from the mother via eggshells and also through direct parental feeding. While no clinical signs of toxicity were detected, the potential impact of lead on morbidity and mortality in Kaka species calls for continued monitoring of this toxicant and its effects on behavior and neurodevelopment.

Risk of lead exposure from wild game consumption from cross-sectional studies in Madre de Dios, Peru

Axel J. Berky et al.

Summary: This study investigates blood lead levels (BLL) and sources of lead exposure in the Amazon region. The findings suggest that indigenous status and consumption of wild game are associated with increased BLLs. The use of lead ammunition in hunting wild game may serve as a common source of lead exposure in the Amazon. Additionally, communities relying on wild game and wild fish may face a dual burden of lead and mercury exposure.

Influences of lead exposure on its accumulation in organs, meat, eggs and bone during laying period of hens

Shujie Wang et al.

Summary: Elevated levels of environmental lead pose serious health hazards to animals and humans. In this study, ISA Brown layers were fed with daily diets containing three different levels of lead. The results showed that kidneys and livers had relatively high lead concentrations, while meat had low lead levels. Eggshell and yolk were identified as potential pathways for lead excretion in hens, with egg white remaining at safe levels. Additionally, even low doses of lead intake could negatively impact bone health. Carotenoids in the humerus of hens exposed to high doses of lead increased significantly, serving as an indicator for stress resistance. Lead exposure not only affects organ toxicity and physiological features in poultry immediately, but also harms bone quality in the long term. The risk of excessive lead in poultry meat is lower compared to viscera and eggs, indicating a low risk to food safety.
