Boolean finite cell method for multi-material problems including local enrichment of the Ansatz space

Marton Petoe et al.

Summary: The Finite Cell Method (FCM) is an efficient and accurate simulation method for complex geometries. It uses rectangular elements with higher-order shape functions and handles cut elements at domain boundaries or material interfaces. This study introduces a novel integration scheme for multi-material problems that extends the standard space-tree decomposition and combines it with a local enrichment technique. The results show significant reductions in the number of integration points and computational time while maintaining accuracy.

A mathematical theory for mass lumping and its generalization with applications to isogeometric analysis

Yannis Voet et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the use of explicit time integration schemes coupled with Galerkin discretizations of time-dependent partial differential equations to solve linear systems with mass matrices at each time step. The commonly used approximation method, mass lumping, which replaces the mass matrix with a diagonal approximation, is examined, along with its theoretical basis for finite element methods using the classical Lagrange basis. The paper also explores the extension of these theoretical results to banded and Kronecker product matrices, which have efficient linear system solving capabilities. The practical relevance of the theoretical findings is highlighted through their application to isogeometric discretizations.

Immersed boundary parametrizations for full waveform inversion

Tim Buerchner et al.

Summary: Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) is a successful method for reconstructing material models from measured wave signals. It is particularly successful in reconstructing smoothly varying material deviations, but not fully suitable for detecting sharp defects with low material contrast in non-destructive testing (NDT).

On the numerical properties of high-order spectral (Euler-Bernoulli) beam elements

Sascha Eisentraeger et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the numerical properties of a high-order spectral Euler-Bernoulli beam element (SBE) with a C-1-continuous approximation of the displacement field. The C-1-continuous shape functions are based on an Hermitian interpolation scheme and Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre (GLL) points. The element formulation achieves a diagonal mass matrix which is attractive for high-frequency transient analyses, but at the cost of under-integration. The numerical analysis demonstrates that the SBE has good accuracy and increased efficiency in structural dynamics through the use of diagonal mass matrix.

An eigenvalue stabilization technique to increase the robustness of the finite cell method for finite strain problems

Wadhah Garhuom et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an eigenvalue stabilization technique to address the high condition number issue in the finite cell method caused by broken cells, improving the robustness of large deformation analysis. By identifying and dealing with modes that lead to high condition numbers, additional stiffness is added to improve the condition number while maintaining the solution unchanged. The performance of this technique is demonstrated using various numerical examples.

Non-negative moment fitting quadrature for cut finite elements and cells undergoing large deformations

Wadhah Garhuom et al.

Summary: Fictitious domain methods simplify the discretization of a domain, but require special integration schemes for broken cells with discontinuous integrands. This paper presents an extended moment fitting method with constraints to ensure the generation of positive weights.

Moment fitted cut spectral elements for explicit analysis of guided wave propagation

Sergio Nicoli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for simulating guided wave propagation in solids defined by implicit surfaces. The method uses structured grids of spectral elements and a fictitious domain approach to represent complex geometrical features. A novel moment fitting approach is introduced to restore the diagonal mass matrix property in elements intersected by interfaces, resulting in increased accuracy.

Marton Petoe et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an enhanced octree-decomposition-based integration scheme that reduces computational effort by simplifying the local integration mesh using data compression techniques, leading to fewer integration points. It has minimal negative effect on simulation accuracy and can be added modularly to existing codes.

A C1-continuous time domain spectral finite element for wave propagation analysis of Euler-Bernoulli beams

Santosh Kapuria et al.

Summary: A C-1-continuous time-domain spectral finite element is developed for efficient analysis of flexural-guided wave propagation in beam-type structures. The new spectral interpolation method eliminates the Runge phenomenon and enhances computational efficiency, providing accurate results for wave propagation problems.
