GIRK channel activity in prelimbic pyramidal neurons regulates the extinction of cocaine conditioned place preference in male mice

Timothy R. Rose et al.

Summary: Drug-induced neuroadaptations in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) have been linked to drug-associated memories. This study found that ablation of GIRK channels and GABA(B) receptors did not affect acquisition of cocaine-related memories, but GIRK channel ablation impaired extinction of cocaine-related memories in male mice. Increasing GIRK channel activity accelerated the extinction of cocaine-related memories.

Spatial Memory Training Counteracts Hippocampal GIRK Channel Decrease in the Transgenic APPSw,Ind J9 Alzheimer's Disease Mouse Model

Sara Temprano-Carazo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of GIRK channel expression on transgenic mice models of Alzheimer's disease during aging. The findings suggest that GIRK2 may contribute to the excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmission imbalance found in AD models, and training in a cognitive hippocampal-dependent task may reverse this effect.

Use of a Molecular Switch Probe to Activate or Inhibit GIRK1 Heteromers In Silico Reveals a Novel Gating Mechanism

Summary: This study investigates the gating transitions and ion permeation mechanism of GIRK1/2 and GIRK1/4 channels through molecular dynamics simulations, revealing the crucial role of three hydrophobic residues in the transmembrane domain 1 in channel gating control and the involvement of PIP2 in stabilizing the pre-open and open states of the channel.

The Expression and Localisation of G-Protein-Coupled Inwardly Rectifying Potassium (GIRK) Channels Is Differentially Altered in the Hippocampus of Two Mouse Models of Alzheimer's Disease

Rocio Alfaro-Ruiz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expression and localization patterns of GIRK2 channels in two transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. The results showed significant reduction of GIRK2 expression in P301S mice, but no change in APP/PS1 mice. Ultrastructural approaches revealed decreased surface localization of GIRK2 in CA1 pyramidal cells in both transgenic mice models. These findings suggest a redistribution of GIRK channels and potential contribution to cognitive dysfunctions in Alzheimer's disease animal models.
