A Pd-catalyzed carbonylative dearomatization of indoles using Co-2(CO)(8) as a safe CO source has been reported. This research provides an atom-economical and straightforward approach for the efficient construction of carbonyl-containing spiroindolenines in moderate to good yields. The protocol features a simple catalytic system, operational safety, easy scale-up and versatile transformations.
