Human Breast Milk microRNAs, Potential Players in the Regulation of Nervous System

Luis Freiria-Martinez et al.

Summary: Human milk is rich in miRNAs and exosomes, which play significant roles in neurodevelopment and normal function. Through analyzing human breast milk samples, we identified 132 different miRNAs, 69 of which showed significant differential expression. These miRNAs are involved in gene regulation related to synaptic activity and neuron projection morphogenesis. Our findings suggest that human milk can transmit molecular and biological information for brain development.

Brain Cells Release Calreticulin That Attracts and Activates Microglia, and Inhibits Amyloid Beta Aggregation and Neurotoxicity

Kyle M. Reid et al.

Summary: The study found that calreticulin can be released by microglia and neurons, and it affects microglia and neurons relevant to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. It can chemotactically attract and activate microglia to release cytokines and chemokines, block A beta fibrillization and modify A beta oligomerization, alter microglial morphology and proliferation, and provide neuroprotection against A beta neurotoxicity.

Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF) Receptors Are Involved in Survival of Retinal Neurons

Susanne Buerger et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that both PEDF receptors, PEDF-R and LR, are co-expressed in RGC and R28 retinal precursor cells, and their expression is upregulated by VEGF and under hypoxic conditions. These receptors mediate the pro-survival effects of PEDF on RGC by enhancing the expression of anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective factors. This highlights the importance of both PEDF receptors for the viability of retinal neurons.

The bioactivity of colostrum and milk exosomes of high, average, and low immune responder cows on human intestinal epithelial cells

Mikayla Ross et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the functional role of bovine milk exosomes compared with colostrum exosomes from high, average, and low immune responders using Caco-2 cells. The results showed that milk exosomes maintain cell metabolic activity and are not cytotoxic, with significantly greater metabolic activity observed with exosomes from high responder cows. Additionally, milk exosomes were found to have lower caspase 3 activity compared to colostrum exosomes, particularly those from low responders.

Role of RhoA-ROCK signaling in Parkinson's disease

Mahalaxmi Iyer et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a complex neurodegenerative disease characterized by depletion of midbrain dopaminergic neurons. Current challenges in PD research include finding therapies to stop or reverse disease progression, identifying reliable biomarkers, and improving understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms. The RhoA-ROCK signaling pathway shows promise in potentially addressing PD symptoms and pathogenesis.

Microglial phagocytosis of neurons in neurodegeneration, and its regulation

Claire A. Butler et al.

Summary: Recent evidence suggests that excessive microglial phagocytosis of live neurons and synapses contributes to neurodegeneration in animal models of various brain diseases. Factors regulating microglial phagocytosis of neurons could be potential treatment targets to prevent neurodegeneration induced by excessive microglial phagocytosis of live neurons and synapses.

Longitudinal Changes in the Concentration of Major Human Milk Proteins in the First Six Months of Lactation and Their Effects on Infant Growth

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in multiple human milk proteins during the first six months of lactation, finding that their concentrations decreased over time. Factors like maternal age and mode of delivery were found to impact these changes. Additionally, the concentration of alpha(s-1) casein in milk was inversely associated with infant weight, suggesting that milk protein composition may influence infant growth.

RhoA drives actin compaction to restrict axon regeneration and astrocyte reactivity after CNS injury

Sina Stern et al.

Summary: Studies reveal that an inhibitory extracellular environment and neuron-intrinsic processes work together to prevent axon regeneration in the adult central nervous system. Genetic loss-of-function experiments show that the small GTPase RhoA relays extracellular inhibitory signals to the cytoskeleton. Neuronal RhoA restricts axon regeneration by activating myosin II, while astrocytic RhoA limits injury-induced astrogliosis through YAP signaling.

Regulation of beta-amyloid production in neurons by cholesterol

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that apoE uses astrocyte-derived cholesterol to traffic neuronal APP in and out of lipid clusters, generating A beta peptide. Deletion of astrocyte cholesterol synthesis reduces amyloid and tau burden in a mouse model of AD, indicating that cholesterol is kept low in neurons and astrocytes regulate A beta accumulation through cholesterol signaling.
