Life cycle cost assessment and multi-criteria decision analysis of environment-friendly building insulation materials-A review

Jianjun Zhao et al.

Summary: Effective application of solid waste in building insulation materials is important for global economic and social development, but systematic studies in this area are lacking. By evaluating different types of solid waste recycled building insulation materials, suggestions for improvement can be made. Analyzing life cycle cost, energy consumption, and gas emissions can help in selecting the most promising building insulation material, while also indicating future research directions.

A systematic review of life cycle assessment of solid waste management: Methodological trends and prospects

Kyle Sebastian Mulya et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on the development of critical methodological steps in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on solid waste management. Through a systematic review of 240 studies, it is found that energy-related applications are increasing in LCA studies on solid waste management. The review also highlights the issue of ambiguous data sources and the need for method standardization.

Double-life sustainable construction materials from alkali activation of volcanic ash/discarded glass mixture

Enrico Bernardo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the sustainability of volcanic ash conversion into inorganic polymers by activating fine powders of volcanic ash with low molarity NaOH solutions and waste glass powders. The resulting porous glass-ceramics exhibited remarkable strength-to-density ratio. Foams with excellent strength-to-density ratio were also obtained through thermal transformation of highly porous cold consolidated materials.

Using life cycle assessment to achieve a circular economy

Claudia Pena et al.

Summary: The current global interest in circular economy presents an opportunity to improve society's resource efficiency and sustainability in consumption and production. However, there is a lack of harmonized methods to assess the sustainability impacts of specific CE strategies. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a well-suited method for evaluating the sustainability impacts of CE strategies, but there are still challenges to be addressed in using LCA as an assessment methodology for CE.

Up-cycling of 'unrecyclable' glasses in glass-based foams by weak alkali-activation, gel casting and low-temperature sintering

Durgaprasad D. Ramteke et al.

Summary: This manuscript suggests the upcycling of specific chemical composition glasses through the production of highly porous glass foams. The cellular structures were stabilized by gelation of suspensions and viscous flow sintering at 700-800 degrees C. The foams showed excellent strength-to-density ratio and maintained uniform open porosity.

Recycling of glass waste into foam glass boards: A comparison of cradle-to-gate life cycles of boards with different foaming agents

Robson Couto da Silva et al.

Summary: Glass residues can be used as raw material to produce foam glass boards, with sodium hydroxide as an environmentally friendly foaming agent. Research findings show that sodium hydroxide has better environmental performance in terms of GWP, while carbon black has lower acidification potential and EPS performs better in terms of human toxicity by air.

Integration of techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment for sustainable process design - A review

Roksana Mahmud et al.

Summary: For sustainable design, integrating techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) is crucial for analyzing the relationships between technical, economic, and environmental performance. Integrated TEA-LCA tool can provide more information for trade-off analysis and reduce inconsistency in decision making. Further research is needed to develop methodological guidelines and software tools for integrated TEA-LCA analysis of emerging technologies at low TRLs.

Life cycle assessment and circularity indicators

Lucia Rigamonti et al.

Summary: Circularity indicators and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) have great potential in circular decision making, but they cannot be used alone to choose the best circular economy projects as they only provide a partial view on the environmental performance of a system. However, a high degree of circularity can help build good relationships with customers, increase reputation, and facilitate access to funding.

Application of Life Cycle Assessment to chemical recycling of post-use glass containers on the laboratory scale towards circular economy implementation

Carlo Ingrao et al.

Summary: The study highlights the environmental hotspots in the process of recycling glass cullet into sodium silicate, which are the production of electricity and sodium hydroxide. By sourcing electricity needs through a photovoltaic plant, a 64% reduction in environmental damage can be achieved. This research demonstrates that recycling glass cullet is more environmentally sustainable than the virgin-origin counterpart, showing the potential for implementing sustainable circular models in the economy.
