An antioxidant and antibacterial polydopamine-modified thermo-sensitive hydrogel dressing for Staphylococcus aureus-infected wound healing

Pengjin Ge et al.

Summary: In this study, a thermo-sensitive and ROS-scavenging hydrogel based on polydopamine modified poly(epsilon-caprolactone-co-glycolide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone-co-glycolide) (PDA/P2) triblock copolymer was developed. The hydrogel showed good ROS-scavenging ability and antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the hydrogel dressing promoted wound healing by inhibiting bacterial growth, alleviating inflammation, and inducing angiogenesis and collagen deposition.

3D-Printed, Dual Crosslinked and Sterile Aerogel Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Ana Iglesias-Mejuto et al.

Summary: In this study, reinforced alginate-hydroxyapatite (HA) aerogel scaffolds were successfully fabricated for bone tissue engineering (BTE) applications by combining extrusion-based 3D-printing and supercritical CO2 gel drying. Intermediate and post-processing strategies such as gel ageing in CaCl2 solutions and glutaraldehyde (GA) chemical crosslinking were utilized to achieve highly crosslinked aerogel scaffolds. The resulting aerogels were dual porous, bio- and hemocompatible, and had high bioactivity dependent on the HA content, marking a significant advance towards optimizing advanced biomaterials and their sterilization.

Drug loaded cellulose-chitosan aerogel microfibers for wound dressing applications

M. Rostamitabar et al.

Summary: Cellulose and chitosan are promising materials for wound dressing due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and other characteristics. This study focuses on transforming these biopolymers into fibrous bioaerogels, which can greatly enhance their functional and structural properties. Wet spun chitosan-cellulose aerogel microfibers (CHCLAFs) were successfully produced using supercritical CO2 drying, and loaded with ibuprofen for wound dressing application. The CHCLAFs exhibited favorable characteristics, such as low density, high porosity, large specific surface area, water absorbability, antibacterial properties, cytotoxicity, and sustained drug release. These findings indicate that CHCLAFs have the potential to be used as effective wound dressing materials.
