Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

An efficient U-Net framework for lung nodule detection using densely connected dilated convolutions

Zeeshan Ali et al.

Summary: Remote health monitoring is crucial for remote areas lacking standard medical facilities, and smart city technologies play a key role in providing health services. Lung cancer diagnosis relies on early detection of lung nodules, which have visual similarities with surrounding areas. The proposed algorithm efficiently handles different types of lung nodules without the need for complete CT scan images or nodule patches.

CSE-GAN: A 3D conditional generative adversarial network with concurrent squeeze-and-excitation blocks for lung nodule segmentation

Shweta Tyagi et al.

Summary: Lung nodule segmentation is crucial for early-stage lung cancer diagnosis, and convolutional neural networks have shown superior performance in this task. However, data scarcity and class imbalance remain challenges for these methods. In this study, we propose a 3D conditional generative adversarial network approach that learns the data distribution for better segmentation results, and achieve significantly improved performances on two datasets.

LwMLA-NET: A Lightweight Multi-Level Attention-Based NETwork for Segmentation of COVID-19 Lungs Abnormalities From CT Images

Kaushiki Roy et al.

Summary: COVID-19, a global pandemic, has typical abnormal findings in chest CT images such as ground-glass opacities (GGOs) and consolidation. Manual annotation of these abnormalities is complex and time-consuming, so we developed a vision-based analysis framework for automated segmentation of lung abnormalities. Our deep learning framework, LwMLA-NET, outperforms other state-of-the-art deep learning frameworks in terms of segmentation performance and has acceptable generalization capability.
