Investigating the nexuses between transportation Infrastructure, renewable energy Sources, and economic Growth: Striving towards sustainable development

Zhang Yu et al.

Summary: The global economy has experienced unprecedented growth in recent decades, driven by increasing interconnectedness among countries and the subsequent demand for crude oil imports. However, the factors influencing this increasing demand have not been extensively researched, highlighting the need for empirical verification. This study investigates the effects of transportation infrastructure, economic growth, and renewable energy on crude oil imports, highlighting the significant role of these factors in shaping import patterns.

The untold subtlety of energy consumption and its influence on policy drive towards Sustainable Development Goal 7

Rajvikram Madurai Elavarasan et al.

Summary: The Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) plays a key role in achieving climate goals by focusing on affordable and clean energy. This study analyzes the impact of energy consumption on renewable penetration, energy capacity, production, and emissions in 40 countries. Three scenarios are identified, highlighting the need for policy frameworks to promote renewable energy and decouple fossil fuel use. The study also emphasizes the importance of understanding the relationship between energy consumption and the elements of SDG 7 to optimize existing policies.

Trade openness, globalization, and natural resources management: The moderating role of economic complexity in newly industrialized countries

Xiuping Guo et al.

Summary: Enhancing resource efficiency is a primary concern for industrialized countries. The role of economic complexity and trade openness in influencing resource consumption is underexplored. This study examines the short and long-run impact of trade openness, economic complexity, economic growth, and globalization on the material footprints in newly industrialized countries (NICs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that trade openness, globalization, and economic growth have a negative impact, while economic complexity positively affects resource consumption in the NICs. Trade openness and economic complexity significantly affect resource consumption in the long run, but their effect is negligible in the short run. The findings suggest that revising trade policies and promoting economic complexity can help reduce resource consumption in newly industrialized regions.

Nexus between non-renewable energy production, CO2 emissions, and healthcare spending in OECD economies

Hummera Saleem et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic relationships between non-renewable energy production, healthcare expenditures, and CO2 emissions in the OECD region. The results show that healthcare expenditures have a positive impact on energy production, and energy production has a positive unidirectional causal relationship with CO2 emissions. However, CO2 emissions have no significant relation with energy production. There is a positive bidirectional relationship between healthcare spending and CO2 emissions, but no evidence that healthcare spending causes energy production.

Do international collaborations in environmental-related technology development in the US pay off in combating carbon dioxide emissions? Role of domestic environmental innovation, renewable energy consumption, and trade openness

Chengde You et al.

Summary: Many economies are seeking to improve environmental quality through international collaboration in environmental-related technology development (ICERTD), and this study examines the relationship between ICERTD and CO2 emissions in the U.S. It finds that ICERTD, domestic environmental innovation, and renewable energy consumption benefit the U.S. in reducing CO2 emissions in the long run, while trade openness and gross domestic product per capita are positively associated with CO2 emissions. Policy recommendations for increasing ICERTD for decarbonization are suggested.

The impact of clean energy consumption on economic growth in China: Is environmental regulation a curse or a blessing?

En-Ze Wang et al.

Summary: Using a finite mixture model to estimate the production function, this research examines the interrelationships among environmental regulation, clean energy consumption, and economic growth. The findings show that environmental regulation enhances the positive impact of clean energy consumption on economic growth, while ignoring measurement error and misspecifying the production function can bias estimation results. Moreover, traditional frameworks may underestimate the significance of clean energy consumption's impact on economic growth compared to accounting for heterogeneity and using clean energy production data.

Do renewable energy consumption and financial globalisation contribute to ecological sustainability in newly industrialized countries?

Yang Miao et al.

Summary: This study uses the Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) technique to analyze the impact of financial globalization and renewable energy consumption on ecological footprint in newly industrialized countries. The findings suggest that financial globalization and renewable energy consumption contribute to environmental quality, while economic growth and natural resource consumption increase ecological footprint. The study also validates the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis and finds that financial globalization indirectly affects the environment through natural resources.

Climate change and its impact on biodiversity and human welfare

K. R. Shivanna

Summary: Climate change refers to long-term temperature and weather changes caused by human activities. The most common manifestations are the increase in average global temperature and extreme and unpredictable weather. Climate change has become a global emergency, affecting not only human well-being but also the sustainability of other life forms. The main drivers of climate change are the enormous increase in greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide) in recent decades, largely due to the burning of coal and fossil fuels, as well as deforestation. The main consequences of climate change include a marked increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, rising sea levels, decreasing crop productivity, and loss of biodiversity. Mitigation measures include significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in forest coverage. The COP 21, held in Paris in 2015, adopted a legally binding treaty to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100 compared to pre-industrial levels. However, under the current emission scenario, the world is heading for a 3-4 degrees Celsius warming by the end of the century. COP 26, held in Glasgow in November 2021, further discussed this issue, with many countries pledging to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and to end deforestation, which are essential requirements to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target. However, even with the implementation of these pledges, the temperature rise is expected to be around 2.4 degrees Celsius. Additional measures are urgently needed to achieve the goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and to sustain biodiversity and human welfare.

Achievements, challenges and global implications of China's carbon neutral pledge

Hong Yang et al.

Summary: China's pledge of carbon neutrality by 2060 is crucial in inspiring global climate action and reducing global warming and air pollution-related premature deaths. It can also encourage other major carbon-emitting countries and nations along the Belt and Road Initiative routes to actively contribute. However, achieving carbon neutrality requires technological breakthroughs, large-scale investments, and strong policies and implementation plans.

Connections of climate change and variability to large and extreme forest fires in southeast Australia

Nerilie J. Abram et al.

Summary: The unprecedented 2019/20 Black Summer bushfire disaster in southeast Australia was mainly caused by extreme dry climate and long-term climate trends leading to increased fire risk. Improving local and national adaptation measures while pursuing ambitious global climate change mitigation efforts are necessary to limit further increases in fire risk in southeast Australia. Multiple climate change contributors have led to an increase in fire extent and intensity over the past decades, and this trend is likely to continue into the future.

Summary: This study, based on balanced panel data of 30 Chinese provinces from 1987 to 2017, explores the impact of carbon emissions on economic growth through a panel smooth transition regression model. Exploring asymmetric relationship between Islamic banking development and economic growth in Pakistan: Fresh evidence from a non-linear ARDL approach

Summary: The study found an asymmetric relationship between Islamic banking development and economic growth in Pakistan, with positive shocks having a significant positive association with economic growth in the long run, while only positive shocks had a significant positive relationship with economic growth in the short run. The interconnection between Islamic banking development and economic growth was asymmetric/non-linear in the long run, but symmetric/linear in the short run. Non-linear models provide more realistic results by capturing hidden asymmetries, helping policymakers make useful decisions.
