Human amygdala compared to orbitofrontal cortex connectivity, and emotion

Edmund T. Rolls et al.

Summary: The amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex are involved in emotion. Through experiments on 171 humans from the Human Connectome Project, it was found that the human amygdala has fewer effective connections with cortical regions compared to the orbitofrontal cortex. It is proposed that the amygdala is primarily involved in autonomic and conditioned responses, rather than declarative emotion.

Multiple cortical visual streams in humans

Edmund T. Rolls et al.

Summary: Using the HCP-MMP atlas, the effective connectivity between visual cortical regions in human brain was investigated. Different visual streams were found to be involved in object recognition, scene representations, language systems, and social behavior. These streams are connected hierarchically and interact with reward systems and memory systems.

Prefrontal and somatosensory-motor cortex effective connectivity in humans

Edmund T. Rolls et al.

Summary: This study used the multimodal parcellation atlas of the Human Connectome Project (HCP) to measure the effective connectivity, functional connectivity, and tractography between 57 cortical frontal and somatosensory regions and the 360 cortical regions. The results showed that the ventral somatosensory stream and the dorsal action somatosensory stream have different connections with other brain regions, indicating their involvement in different cognitive functions.

Hippocampal spatial view cells for memory and navigation, and their underlying connectivity in humans

Edmund T. Rolls

Summary: Hippocampal and parahippocampal gyrus spatial view neurons in primates respond to spatial location and have relatively invariant responses in terms of retinal position and eye position. These spatial view cells are formed by self-organized combinations of feature inputs. They play a key role in episodic memory and navigation.

Auditory cortical connectivity in humans

Edmund T. Rolls et al.

Summary: Study investigated effective connectivity between auditory cortical regions and other cortical regions using data from 171 Human Connectome Project participants. A hierarchy of auditory cortical processing was identified, from core regions to belt regions and onward to higher-level regions. The study also found connections between auditory regions, visual regions, and language-related semantic regions, suggesting the involvement of multimodal processing in object identification and language comprehension.

Emotion, motivation, decision-making, the orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and the amygdala

Edmund T. Rolls

Summary: The orbitofrontal cortex and amygdala are involved in emotion and motivation, but the relationship between these functions is not clear. A unified theory of emotion and motivation is described, in which motivational states involve instrumental goal-directed actions for rewards or punishment avoidance, while emotional states are elicited by received or not received rewards or punishment. Recent evidence suggests that the orbitofrontal cortex is involved in reward value and depression, while the amygdala is implicated in brainstem-mediated responses to stimuli and not declarative emotion. The anterior cingulate cortex is involved in learning actions for rewards and provides goals for navigation, along with the orbitofrontal and ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

Summary: The human orbitofrontal cortex, vmPFC, and anterior cingulate cortex play a crucial role in reward processing, emotion, and episodic memory. Effective connectivity between cortical regions and subcortical regions was measured in the human brain, revealing the complex network involved in these processes. This research enhances our understanding of the functional and neural connections in the brain.

Reproducible brain-wide association studies require thousands of individuals

Scott Marek et al.

Summary: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has greatly advanced our understanding of the human brain, but similar progress has not been made in mental health research. By analyzing three large neuroimaging datasets, researchers found that brain-wide association studies (BWAS) had smaller effect sizes than previously thought, leading to underpowered studies, inflated effect sizes, and replication failures. As sample sizes increased, replication rates improved and effect size inflation decreased. Functional MRI, cognitive tests, and multivariate methods showed more robust effects in BWAS. Smaller than expected brain-phenotype associations and population subsample variability explain the widespread replication failures in BWAS. Reproducibility in BWAS requires samples with thousands of individuals.

The human language effective connectome

Edmund T. Rolls et al.

Summary: This study investigated the brain networks involved in language processing by measuring the effective connectivity between cortical regions using data from the Human Connectome Project. The results revealed multiple semantic networks that are responsible for processing different types of information, such as visual, auditory, and somatosensory information. These networks are connected to other brain regions and are involved in various cognitive processes, including memory and language production. The findings also suggest that the hippocampal episodic memory system plays a role in semantic processing, and that frontal regions are important for syntax and speech output.

The hippocampus, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and episodic and semantic memory

Edmund T. Rolls

Summary: The human ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC)/anterior cingulate cortex is involved in reward, emotion, and memory. The study reveals that the orbitofrontal cortex in humans connects with the vmPFC and anterior cingulate cortex, providing a pathway for reward and emotional value to be integrated into episodic memory. This value component contributes to primarily episodic memories, which can be repeatedly recalled from the hippocampus and eventually incorporated into semantic and autobiographical memories in the neocortex. The connection between the orbitofrontal and anterior cingulate regions and the cholinergic nuclei in the septal and basal forebrain helps consolidate memory and explains why damage to the vmPFC impairs memory. Thus, the human hippocampus and vmPFC play complementary roles in the formation of episodic and semantic memories.

Gender-related differences in frontal-parietal modular segregation and altered effective connectivity in internet gaming disorder

Ningning Zeng et al.

Summary: The study revealed abnormalities in modular segregation of the FPN and connections between FPN and CON in male IGD patients, suggesting mechanisms for male vulnerability to IGD. Additionally, increased bottom-up effect from CON to FPN in male IGD subjects could reflect dysfunction between brain networks. Different mechanisms may underlie IGD in males and females, implying that different interventions may be optimal.

Sex Differences in Verbal Working Memory: A Systematic Review an Meta-Analysis

Daniel Voyer et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis quantified sex differences in verbal working memory and found a small overall female advantage. The study also revealed that the magnitude of female advantage varied across different memory tasks and was influenced by factors such as recall direction, stimulus type, presentation format, response format, age, sample source, and contact with authors. These results have implications for understanding sex differences in episodic memory and have relevance for clinical applications and theory building.
