Investigating the provenance of iron bars from Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer Roman shipwrecks (south-east France) with iron isotopes

Jean Milot et al.

Summary: The study used Fe isotopes to determine the origin of iron bars from Roman shipwrecks in France, validating most provenance hypotheses. The research demonstrates the promising approach of combined trace element and Fe isotope analyses for the provenance studies of iron metals in archaeological contexts.

Applying lead (Pb) isotopes to explore mobility in humans and animals

Jane A. Evans et al.

Summary: Lead isotopes serve as a useful method to track the origin and movement of humans and animals, providing complementary information to other provenance tools. In Britain, the distribution of lead isotope ratios closely relates to the tectonic regimes, making it particularly relevant to use in this region. Due to modern pollution, it is challenging to use modern floral or faunal samples to characterize biosphere variation, thus geological datasets are used to define isoscape variation and present the first lead isotope map of Britain. The geographic origin of Neolithic animals in Great Britain is assessed using well provenanced samples and reference fields of diagnostic compositions in mu-T space.

Investigation of Fe isotope systematics for the complete sequence of natural and metallurgical processes of Ni lateritic ores: Implications for environmental source tracing

Gildas Ratie et al.

Summary: Metal isotopes are versatile in tracking pollutant sources, but biogeochemical processes can alter their original fingerprint, hindering contamination tracing. This study explores Fe isotope systematics to evaluate its potential as a tracer in polluted lateritic soil, finding no significant Fe isotopic variation during formation and no fractionation during the smelting process. The conservation of Fe isotopic values from ores to by-products is advantageous for tracing anthropogenic sources from mining activities.
