Crude glycerol and glycerol as fuels and fuel additives in combustion applications

Jianan Zhang et al.

Summary: Biodiesels are crucial in achieving low-carbon transportation as renewable fuels. The utilization of crude glycerol, a waste byproduct, to produce glycerol for fuel purposes is an affordable and direct approach. Combining crude glycerol with solid fuels can improve combustion performance, while glycerol as an oxygenated fuel additive lowers NOx emissions.

Flower-like Co3O4 Catalysts for Efficient Catalytic Oxidation of Multi-Pollutants from Diesel Exhaust

Zihao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoflower-like Co3O4 diesel oxide catalysts (DOCs) with the addition of low-content Pt were fabricated to improve the oxidation activity at low temperature for multi-pollutant diesel exhaust. The as-synthesized Pt/Co3O4 catalysts showed better multi-pollutant oxidation activities and resistance towards NO inhibition compared to conventional Pt/Al2O3 DOCs. Furthermore, the Pt/Co3O4 catalysts exhibited exceptional hydrothermal durability and promoted low-temperature catalytic activity through increasing surface oxygen species and reducibility.

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of (Al2O3)2-5FeO+: influence of Fe-substitution on small alumina clusters

Sreekanta Debnath et al.

Summary: The infrared photodissociation spectra of He-tagged (Al2O3)(n)FeO+ (n = 2-5) were measured and assigned using calculated harmonic IR spectra from density functional theory (DFT). The substitution of Fe for Al at 3-fold oxygen coordination sites resulted in elongation of metal oxygen bonds without significantly perturbing the Al-O network structure. Unlike Al2FeO4+ (n = 1), valence isomerism was not observed in this study due to a smaller M:O ratio (M = Al, Fe) and decreasing electron affinities with increasing cluster size.

Selective dehydration of glycerol on copper based catalysts

R. J. Chimentao et al.

Summary: The study found that Cu/ZrO2 catalyst exhibited the highest activity and apparent reaction rate in the dehydration of glycerol to hydroxyacetone process, attributed to the highly acidic support and positive roles of interfacial sites. The application of Weisz-Prater (WP) criterion confirmed the absence of intraparticle diffusion limitations, and DFT study suggested that the active sites are located at the interface of Cu particles and the acidic support.

Mechanisms of aromatization of dilute ethylene on HZSM-5 and on Zn/HZSM-5 catalysts

Aurelien Bonnin et al.

Summary: The Zn deposition was achieved by wet impregnation of the nitrate precursor, and the ethylene conversion is proportional to the concentration of oxo-binuclear Zn cations. The intrinsic activity of protonic acid sites in ethylene transformation depends on their density of Al atoms. The ethylene conversion involves the formation of isobutene, propene, alkanes, and aromatics, with Zn Lewis acid sites playing a role in the process.

Effect of alkali (Cs) doping on the surface chemistry and CO2 hydrogenation performance of CuO/CeO2 catalysts

Georgios Varvoutis et al.

Summary: The effect of cesium doping on CuO/CeO2 catalysts under CO2 hydrogenation conditions was investigated. Results showed that a low amount of cesium improved CO selectivity but inhibited CO2 conversion. Specifically, doping with 2 cesium atoms per nm(2) at 430 degrees Celsius led to over 96% CO selectivity and equilibrium CO2 conversion.

Density Functional Theory Study on the Adsorption Mechanism of Sulphide Gas Molecules on α-Fe2O3(001) Surface

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adsorption structure and electronic behavior of H2S, COS, and CH3SH on the surfaces of pure and vacant alpha-Fe2O3(001). Results showed that H2S and CH3SH can be adsorbed in molecular form on the vacant surface, with stronger adsorption energy and significant electron orbital hybridization. In contrast, COS molecules do not adsorb on the alpha-Fe2O3(001) surface, possibly due to their stable chemical properties.
