Cylindrical Fresnel lens: An innovative path toward a tracking-less concentrating photovoltaics system

Duc Tu Vu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a new optical device - cylindrical Fresnel lenses, historically used in lighthouse concentrators, for application in the field of concentrator photovoltaic. The solar concentrator has the ability to distribute focal points over an arc at any light incidence and has a high acceptance angle. Through simulation and experimentation, the convergence feature and current gain improvement of the new lens design were confirmed.

Smart luminescent solar concentrator as a BICPV window

Ying Nie et al.

Summary: This study presents a smart luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) for building integrated concentrating photovoltaic (BICPV) windows. The proposed smart LSC combines fluorescent dyes with thermochromic materials to enhance photoelectric conversion efficiency and create a dynamic response mechanism to solar radiation and temperature changes. By conducting optical simulations and outdoor experiments, the research provides design parameters for a BICPV smart window system with improved power generation efficiency.

The compound parabolic concentrators for solar photovoltaic applications: Opportunities and challenges

Faisal Masood et al.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs) designs and applications for photovoltaic (PV) systems. CPCs have the ability to collect both direct and diffuse solar radiation, making them suitable for stationary installation and increasing the electrical energy produced by PV modules. However, there are still challenges to be addressed for CPCs, including energy losses and relatively low concentration ratios.

Experimental characterisation of a smart glazing with tuneable transparency, light scattering ability and electricity generation function

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: Daylighting control technologies are essential in sustainable building design, and a smart glazing system integrating BIPV glazing with a thermotropic hydrogel layer can effectively improve daylighting control and energy generation performance. Experimental results showed that the proposed BIPV-TT laminated glazing reduced up to 80% of solar radiation while increasing electrical power outputs by up to 12% in outdoor tests conducted in Nottingham, UK.

Design, development and characterisation of a Building Integrated Concentrating Photovoltaic (BICPV) smart window system

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: A Building Integrated Concentrating Photovoltaic (BICPV) smart window system with a Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (HPC) based thermotropic hydrogel membrane was developed and characterized in this study, showing an increase in power output with temperature and a reduction in light transmittance. Experimental results indicated that the smart window may reduce solar heat gain and building energy demand. Additionally, the study investigated the effects of different concentrations of HPC polymer on the system's electrical and optical performance.
