Introduction of N,N-Dimethylaminoethyls onto Maize Starch for Strong Bonding and Easy Removal for Polyester Warp Sizing

Xun Zhang et al.

Summary: Dimethylaminoethyl (DAE) starch was prepared by the tertiary amination of acid-converted maize starch (ACS) with 2-dimethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride (DAEC center dot HCl), and a series of DAE derivatives with different degrees of substitution (DS) were obtained. The amination significantly improved the bonding strength to polyester fibers and prevented difficulties in quaternized starch desizing. DAE starch showed competitive desizability during oxidant-alkali desizing. Thus, introduction of DAE groups onto ACS achieved a starch-based sizing material with strong bonding and good desizability, particularly with a DS value of 0.037-0.058 for potential application in polyester warp sizing.

Amphipathic combination of poly(sodium allyl sulfonate) and poly(ethyl acrylate) on starch for strong adhesion to cotton fibers and film properties

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the superiority of the new PSAS/PEA structure in adhesion to cotton fibers and film properties, suggesting its potential application for sizing cotton warps. Increasing the grafting ratios of PSAS-g-S-g-PEA samples enhanced bonding strength, elongation at break, and bending endurance, indicating improved performance compared to S-g-P(SAS-co-EA) samples.

Quaternization-butyrylation to improve the viscosity stability, adhesion to fibers, film properties and desizability of starch for warp sizing

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The influence of quaternization and butyrylation on the sizing properties of biological starch macromolecule was evaluated. The results showed that the modified starch, known as quaternized-butyrylated starch (QBS), exhibited improved bonding strength, elongation, paste stability, and desizing efficiency compared to acid-thinned starch (ATS) and quaternized starch (QS).

Introduction of octenylsuccinate and carboxymethyl onto starch for strong bonding to fiber and easy removal from sized yarn

Zhifeng Zhu et al.

Summary: The amphipathic modification of starch with hydrophobic and hydrophilic substituents significantly increased bonding strength to fibers. The combination of CM and OS substituents showed improved bonding strength compared to using them individually. Additionally, the AS derivatives could be easily removed from sized yarns using either enzyme or oxidant desizing methods.

Incorporation of poly(sodium allyl sulfonate) branches on corn starch chains for enhancing its sizing properties: Viscosity stability, adhesion, film properties and desizability

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the influence of PSAS branches on the sizing properties of corn starch, leading to the development of a new starch-based size. Results showed that S-g-PSAS exhibited improved adhesion, viscosity stability, desizability, and film properties compared to HS, with enhancements in bonding forces, viscosity stability, and film properties at higher grafting ratios. This suggests potential for S-g-PSAS as a sizing agent for cotton and viscose fibers.

Investigating the relationship between structure of itaconylated starch and its sizing properties: Viscosity stability, adhesion and film properties for wool warp sizing

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The effect of itaconation on sizing properties of biological macromolecule (corn starch) for developing a new bio-based sizing agent was evaluated. The bonding forces, breaking elongation, and bending endurance of IS samples increased with the number of itaconate substituents. Granular IS has the potential for use as a new starch-based size in the sizing of wool warp yarns.
