Swati Panda et al.

Summary: Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics are promising materials for energy harvesters due to their superior electromechanical, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties. A new lead-free ferroelectric material SrTi2O5 (STO) was synthesized and its structural, morphological, and electrical properties were analyzed. PDMS-STO composites were prepared and a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) with the highest peak-to-peak voltage, current, and power density of 25 V, 92 nA, and 0.64 mW was developed. The PENG device was used for biomechanical energy harvesting and snoring signal recording, with efforts to differentiate between normal and abnormal snores for disease detection.

A self-powered biosensing system based on triboelectric nanogenerator for rapid bacterial DNA detection

Xiaolin Qu et al.

Summary: A self-powered biosensing system based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) was developed for bacterial DNA detection. A vertical contact-separation TENG was designed to provide a steady power supply. The system utilized a carboxyl-functionalized capture probe on etched indium tin oxide (ITO) glass to recognize target bacterial DNA. A multi-walled carbon-nanotube (CNT)-modified signal probe was used to amplify the detection signal. The self-powered biosensing system demonstrated high sensitivity with a low detection limit of 0.084 pM of target DNA. A portable device integrating miniaturized TENG and bioreactor was created for instant detection of bacterial DNA using an LED indicator. This study provides a useful platform for quick bacterial DNA detection and further development of pocket diagnosis with TENG-based biosensing systems.

A self-powered microbiosensor system for specific bacteria detection based on triboelectric nanogenerator

Zhou Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a microbiosensor system based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) was developed for the rapid detection of Gram-negative bacteria (Gnb) such as sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). The system captured Gnb through specific recognition between concanavalin A (ConA)-modified indium tin oxide glass (ITO-ConA) and Gnb, and used ConA-functionalized carboxyl multi walled carbon nanotubes (CNT-ConA) as signal amplification material. TENG provided a stable power supply to the microbiosensor system, and the detection of bacteria concentration was achieved by monitoring the output voltage. By integrating an alarm circuit, the detection results could be directly indicated by a light emitting diode (LED). This research not only offered an effective strategy for detecting Gnb, but also provided useful insights into the development of portable, specific, and stable TENG-based sensor systems.
