Countrywide mapping and assessment of organic carbon saturation in the topsoil using machine learning-based pedotransfer function with uncertainty propagation

Gabor Szatmari et al.

Summary: The objective of the study is to develop a cubist-based pedotransfer function (PTF) for predicting and mapping the saturated SOC content of the topsoils (0-30 cm) in Hungary. The study found that both the physicochemical properties of soils and environmental conditions, such as topography and climate, are important factors in predicting the level of SOC saturation. The results show that there is a significant SOC deficit in a large part of the country, with high spatial variability.

Value compensation of net carbon sequestration alleviates the trend of abandoned farmland: A quantification of paddy field system in China based on perspectives of grain security and carbon neutrality

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: Farmland abandonment in China poses a threat to grain security, and compensating the value of carbon sequestration in grain production could incentivize farmers and mitigate the issue. A study was conducted in Guangdong province to quantify the carbon sequestration value of the rice production system and assess grain security. The results showed decreased rice yield and self-sufficiency rate, as well as significant greenhouse gas emissions. The study proposed compensation standards for carbon neutrality in rice planting to ensure grain security and carbon neutrality targets in China.

Evaluating soil erosion by introducing crop residue cover and anthropogenic disturbance intensity into cropland C-factor calculation: Novel estimations from a cropland-dominant region of Northeast China

Wei Wan et al.

Summary: This study verified the feasibility of improving the C-factor of croplands in areas where cropland is the dominant land-use type. Moreover, our method will contribute to the use of RUSLE with higher precision in other regional-scale soil erosion assessments worldwide.

A Review on Carbon Source and Sink in Arable Land Ecosystems

Xiaochen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the research on carbon sources and sinks in arable land ecosystems by summarizing various studies. The findings reveal that the factors influencing carbon sources and sinks in arable land ecosystems are highly heterogeneous and complex due to differences in climate patterns, soil properties, and management practices. The evaluation of carbon sources and sinks in these ecosystems is also affected by uncertainties caused by different estimation models and methods.

Estimating soil organic carbon stock change at multiple scales using machine learning and multivariate geostatistics

Gabor Szatmari et al.

Summary: This study used geostatistical methods and machine learning to predict SOC stock change in Hungary at different scales and quantified the associated uncertainties. Results showed that predictions and uncertainties of average SOC stock change were smaller for larger spatial supports, and spatial aggregation facilitated obtaining statistically significant SOC stock changes.
