Hydrological response to climate change and human activities in the Bahe River, China

Yuna Shi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the responses of streamflow and baseflow in the Bahe River to climate change and human activities. The results showed a declining trend in hydrometeorological variables in the river basin. Precipitation had a stronger correlation with streamflow compared to baseflow. Human activities mainly affected upstream streamflow, while climate change had a greater impact on midstream baseflow. These findings contribute to our understanding of the response mechanisms of the hydrological cycle in a changing environment.

Investigating the spatial-temporal changes of flood events across the Yangtze River Basin, China: Identification, spatial heterogeneity, and dominant impact factors

Jiarui Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a method combining the Peak Over Threshold (POT) approach and an event-start-and-end detecting approach was proposed to separate flood events in the Yangtze River Basin from 2008-2018. Ten flood behavior metrics were used to fully describe and classify the flood events. The spatial heterogeneity of flood events and the contributions of natural and anthropogenic factors were analyzed. The results showed that meteorological factors were the most important in explaining flood event variations.

Ecological drivers and potential functions of viral communities in flooded arsenic-contaminated paddy soils

Ruichuan Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the viral communities in paddy soils with different levels of arsenic contamination. The structure and diversity of viral communities differed significantly in highly and moderately contaminated soils. There were significant differences in the relative abundance of certain viral genera between highly and moderately contaminated samples. The study also identified bacterial hosts for the detected viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) and found associations between soil virus community structure, prokaryotic community structure, and geochemical properties.

Effect difference of climate change and urbanization on extreme precipitation over the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Zifeng Deng et al.

Summary: Increasing extreme precipitation caused by climate change and human activities may have severe consequences on people's lives and property. This study investigates the effect difference of urbanization, climate change, and their compound effect on extreme precipitation under various scenarios. The results show that annual and total precipitation will be more intense and frequent at a regional scale, and future urbanization exacerbates precipitation at a local scale.

Contribution of climate change and urbanization to the variation of extreme precipitation in the urban agglomerations over the Loess Plateau

Na Wei et al.

Summary: With global warming and rapid urbanization, urban agglomerations over the Loess Plateau are facing various urban disasters. Urbanization has worsened the decreasing trends of extreme precipitation in Taiyuan and Xi'an urban agglomerations and intensified the increasing trends of extreme precipitation in Luoyang, Hohhot, and Xining urban agglomerations. Climate change has been the primary driver of urban precipitation change from 1979 to 2000 in this region, but since 2000, urbanization has gradually played a larger role and amplified the impact of climate change.

Climate Leads to Reversed Latitudinal Changes in Chinese Flood Peak Timing

Yixin Yang et al.

Summary: This study examines the changes in flood peak timing in China from 1961 to 2017 based on the most comprehensive flood data set to date. The results show both earlier and delayed flood occurrences across different regions in China, with a growing spatial extent of concurrent river floods. Soil moisture plays a significant role in modulating these changes, highlighting the strong climate signal on flood timing. These findings emphasize the need for coordinated efforts in mitigating the expanding flood hazards in China.

Assessment of the joint impact of rainfall and river water level on urban flooding in Wuhan City, China

Xiaojie Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the joint impact of rainfall and river water level on urban flooding in Wuhan city. The findings highlight the strong positive dependence between rainfall and water level, implying the underestimation of flood hazards if the interaction between different flood drivers is ignored. The research also reveals an increase in extreme events of heavy rainstorm and higher water levels in recent years, leading to a significant increase in the joint risk of urban flood.

Spatial patterns of typhoon rainfall and associated flood characteristics over a mountainous watershed of a tropical island

Lingfang Chen et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of rainfall in a watershed has a significant impact on flood warning and forecasting. This study classified the spatial characteristics of typhoon rainfall events in the Songtao reservoir watershed using the K-means++ clustering method. The results showed three types of cumulative rainfall patterns in the watershed, with different flood characteristics. The composite analysis of typhoon tracks, wind fields, and moisture flux fields helped to explain the formation mechanism of these spatial patterns of rainfall events.

Climate More Important for Chinese Flood Changes Than Reservoirs and Land Use

Long Yang et al.

Summary: Despite intense human alterations, climate variations dominate the spatial pattern of changes in annual flood peak discharge in China. Regional flood increases are mainly associated with increasing precipitation, while regional decreases are due to decreased soil moisture in the North China Plain. Flood management policies in China should adapt to the effects of climate change beyond local measures.
