Rare event estimation with sequential directional importance sampling

Kai Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a sequential directional importance sampling (SDIS) method for rare event estimation. The method expresses a small failure probability in terms of a sequence of auxiliary failure probabilities, estimated using Monte Carlo simulation and directional importance sampling. The method outperforms existing sequential sampling reliability methods, as demonstrated by experiments.

Estimation of small failure probability using generalized subset simulation

Kai Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a generalized subset simulation (GSS) method for estimating small failure probability by modifying failure threshold and amplifying input variables to decompose the problem into a series of simple integrals. Two coordinate rotation schemes are used to detect important directions in high-dimensional space, transforming high-dimensional integrals into low-dimensional ones for efficient estimation. Two MCMC algorithms within GSS are introduced for low-dimensional and high-dimensional problems respectively for testing performance using benchmark examples.

Active learning with multifidelity modeling for efficient rare event simulation

Somayajulu L. N. Dhulipala et al.

Summary: The article introduces an active learning framework emphasizing the efficient estimation of rare events using multifidelity modeling. By adaptively deciding the number of required HF simulations based on problem type and complexity, as well as desired result accuracy, the framework achieves greater efficiency and accuracy.

Reliability estimation of an advanced nuclear fuel using coupled active learning, multifidelity modeling, and subset simulation

Somayajulu L. N. Dhulipala et al.

Summary: In this study, coupled active learning, multifidelity modeling, and subset simulation were used to estimate the failure probabilities of TRISO fuels. With multifidelity modeling, information fusion from two low-fidelity models replaced expensive high-fidelity model evaluations. For the 1D TRISO models, different multifidelity modeling strategies were compared, and the strategy employing information fusion from two low-fidelity models called the high-fidelity model least often. For the 2D TRISO model, a physics-based strategy consistently required the fewest calls to the high-fidelity model, while a data-driven strategy had a lower overall simulation time due to instantaneous DNN predictions.

Parallel adaptive Bayesian quadrature for rare event estimation

Chao Dang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method called "Parallel Adaptive Bayesian Quadrature" (PABQ) for quantifying and reducing numerical uncertainty in reliability analysis. The method uses an importance ball sampling technique and a multi-point selection criterion to effectively assess small failure probabilities with a minimum number of iterations, taking advantage of parallel computing.

A unified formalism of the GE-GDEE for generic continuous responses and first-passage reliability analysis of multi-dimensional nonlinear systems subjected to non-white-noise excitations

Meng-Ze Lyu et al.

Summary: The stochastic response and first-passage reliability analysis of multi-dimensional nonlinear systems under non-white-noise dynamic excitations have been challenging problems. This paper extends the globally-evolving-based generalized density evolution equation (GE-GDEE) for these purposes. A more general derivation of the GE-GDEE is provided, and a new process absorbed at the boundary is constructed for first-passage reliability evaluation. The proposed method is demonstrated to be efficient and accurate through numerical examples.

Seismic reliability analysis of energy-dissipation structures by combining probability density evolution method and explicit time-domain method

Jianhua Xian et al.

Summary: Hysteretic dampers like buckling restrained braces are widely used to enhance civil structures exposed to seismic hazard. A hybrid approach combining PDEM and ETDM is proposed for system reliability analysis, where PDEM captures the PDF of system limit-state function and ETDM conducts nonlinear time-history analyses efficiently. This method was shown accurate and efficient in a study on a real engineering building with 32 BRBs.

SESC: A new subset simulation method for rare-events estimation

Mohsen Rashki

Summary: The proposed SESC method is derived from the control variate technique and estimates a quick imprecise failure probability before refining the estimation and directing samples towards the important failure region. Unlike conventional SubSim, the performance of SESC is not affected by the geometry of the performance function away from the limit state surface.
