Investigation of tribological properties of environmentally friendly ionic liquids as a potential lubricity improving additives for water-based lubricants

Raimondas Kreivaitis et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the tribological properties of two protic ionic liquids used as lubricity-improving additives in water. The results show that these additives can greatly improve the lubricity of water, with the positive effect being attributed to the polarity of the additive molecules. The study also finds that the friction pair material and additive concentration play a significant role in the tribological effect. Additionally, both investigated protic ionic liquids can enhance the anticorrosion properties of water.

ZnO nanoparticles coated with oleic acid as additives for a polyalphaolefin lubricant

Fatima Marino et al.

Summary: In this study, oleic acid coated zinc oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and characterized for their thermal and tribological properties. The concentration of nanoparticles affected the density and viscosity, with the optimal concentration at 0.25 wt% showing the best tribological performance. The spherical shape of the nanoparticles and the mending effect were identified as the main factors contributing to the superior performance of the nanolubricant compared to the base oil.

Controllable superlubricity achieved with mixtures of green ionic liquid and glycerol aqueous solution via humidity

Jing Hua et al.

Summary: Superlubricity between steel surfaces lubricated by mixtures of [Cho][Pro] ionic liquid and glycerol aqueous solution has been achieved, even under humidity between 7 and 9% RH. The addition of 3wt% [Cho][Pro] helps to maintain enough water content for a thin water layer at the interface, leading to lower friction. Interestingly, humidity can be used to control the lubrication state between superlubricity and non-superlubricity.
