Pathways to Student Motivation: A Meta-Analysis of Antecedents of Autonomous and Controlled Motivations

Julien S. Bureau et al.

Summary: Students' self-determined motivation is associated with higher academic well-being, persistence, and achievement, and is dependent on the satisfaction of psychological needs - relatedness, competence, and autonomy - which are facilitated through supportive behaviors from notable others. The study shows that teacher autonomy support predicts students' need satisfaction and self-determined motivation more strongly than parental autonomy support, while competence is the most positive predictor of self-determined motivation.

Episodic Volunteering in Sport Events: A Seven-Country Analysis

Aya Okada et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences and similarities in demographic characteristics, satisfaction, and intention to volunteer again among sport event volunteers in seven countries. Biying Wu-Ouyang

Summary: Smartphone addiction, a social problem, has been extensively studied in academia. A qualitative investigation of psychological need-satisfying experiences of a mobile learning application: A Self-Determination Theory approach

Lucas M. Jeno et al.

Summary: Much research on mobile learning lacks theoretical basis for investigating the mechanisms of mobile learning and achievement. This study uses Self-Determination Theory to investigate biology students' experiences of need-satisfaction within a mobile application for learning about species identification. The results show that students experienced satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness while using the mobile application, but surprisingly reported more learning from a traditional textbook compared to the mobile application.
