Incidence of postoperative thrombotic events in ovarian cancer patients with a de-escalated prophylactic strategy: A retrospective cohort study

Yoo-Na Kim et al.

Summary: The incidence of thrombotic events in ovarian cancer patients following a de-escalated prophylactic strategy was determined. The study found a low incidence of thrombotic events in the cohort. Age, body mass index (BMI), and operative duration were identified as independent risk factors for thrombotic events. Age < 57 years and BMI < 21 could help define low-risk groups.

Correlation between clinicopathological characteristics of lung adenocarcinoma and the risk of venous thromboembolism

Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Patients with primary lung adenocarcinoma are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism, especially during the perioperative process and hospitalization. Presence of micropapillary features and older age are positively associated with an increased risk of VTE.

Incidence and Risk Factors for Venous Thromboembolism in Female Patients Undergoing Breast Surgery

Ambrogio P. Londero et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the occurrence and timing of venous thromboembolism (VTE) over a long follow-up period in breast cancer patients, analyzing correlated factors and overall survival. The presence of invasive breast cancer significantly impacts VTE occurrence and survival, with factors such as chronic hypertension, high BMI, cancer type, and evidence of metastasis being identified as significant risk factors for VTE in women undergoing breast surgery.

Incidence, Timing, and Outcomes of Venous Thromboembolism in Patients Undergoing Surgery for Esophagogastric Cancer: A Population-Based Cohort Study

Nader M. Hanna et al.

Summary: Abdominal surgery and chemotherapy are well-established risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with esophageal and gastric cancer. This study found that the highest risk of VTE occurs within 30 days of surgery, with one third of patients being diagnosed after discharge from hospital. Preoperative chemotherapy and longer hospital length of stay are associated with increased risk of VTE. Additionally, VTE is an independent risk factor for inferior survival in patients with esophageal or gastric cancer.

Postoperative venous thromboembolism after surgery for stage IA non-small-cell lung cancer: A single-center, prospective cohort study

Honghong Dong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) in stage IA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The results showed that the incidence of postoperative VTE in stage IA NSCLC patients was 7.3%. Age and postoperative day 1 D-D value were identified as independent risk factors for VTE. The Caprini score had a certain value in diagnosing postoperative VTE in stage IA NSCLC patients.

Recurrent retroperitoneal sarcomas: Clinical outcomes of surgical treatment and prognostic factors

Saveria Tropea et al.

Summary: Surgical factors like extent of surgery, margin status, and histological grade of recurrent tumor, as well as well-differentiated liposarcoma histological subtype, were identified as independent prognostic factors for overall survival and disease specific survival in patients with recurrent retroperitoneal sarcoma. The achievement of clear resection margins was highlighted as a key factor for improving survival outcomes.

American Society of Hematology 2021 guidelines for management of venous thromboembolism: prevention and treatment in patients with cancer

Gary H. Lyman et al.

Summary: These evidence-based guidelines aim to support decision-making on the prevention and treatment of VTE in cancer patients, covering mechanical and pharmacological prophylaxis, as well as recommendations for initial, short-term, and long-term treatment based on patient risk and treatment circumstances. Recommendations vary depending on patient risk level and treatment situation.

Oncological outcomes after major vascular resections for primary retroperitoneal liposarcoma

Gaya Spolverato et al.

Summary: The study found that vascular resection is feasible and safe in the surgical management of primary retroperitoneal liposarcomas, even in the context of multivisceral resections, although it is associated with a higher complication rate. However, vascular involvement is independently associated with a higher risk of local recurrence, distant metastases, and death, suggesting a more aggressive biology that should be considered in the initial management of this complex disease.
