Switching the production of oxygenated platform chemicals during pyrolysis of sugarcane bagasse by regulating the secondary reactions

Anqing Zheng et al.

Summary: This study systematically explored the regulation of secondary reactions during the pyrolysis of sugarcane bagasse by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature and H2SO4 loading. It was found that reducing the pyrolysis temperature suppressed both primary and secondary reactions, while adjusting H2SO4 loading promoted primary depolymerization reactions and secondary dehydration reactions. These findings demonstrate the capability of adjusting H2SO4 loading to regulate primary and secondary reactions during biomass pyrolysis at low temperatures and enable product switching.

Influence of cellulose ultrastructure on the catalytic pyrolysis for selective production of levoglucosenone

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the production efficiency of levoglucosenone (LGO) from cellulose catalytic pyrolysis by optimizing its ultrastructure. Cellulose was pretreated with Na2CO3 solutions of different concentrations and Amberlyst-15 (A-15) at different temperatures. The effects of pretreatment on cellulose ultrastructure, particularly the degree of polymerization (DP) and crystallinity index (CrI), were investigated. The catalytic pyrolysis experiments revealed that Na2CO3 pretreatment significantly reduced CrI of cellulose and slightly decreased DP. Low Na2CO3 concentration promoted LGO generation by reducing CrI, while high concentration hindered LGO formation due to the transformation of cellulose I & beta; to II. A-15 pretreatment increased CrI and decreased DP with increasing temperature, leading to a gradual decrease in LGO yield. The cellulose pretreated with 1% Na2CO3 solution exhibited the highest LGO yield of 19.76 wt.%, higher than that of raw cellulose (18.04 wt.%), with lower pyrolysis temperature and catalyst dosage.

Enhanced production of levoglucosenone from pretreatment assisted catalytic pyrolysis of waste paper

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: A new method for selectively producing levoglucosenone (LGO) from catalytic pyrolysis of waste paper was developed. Combined pre-treatment with ethanol and HCl showed the highest yield of LGO. Using phosphoric acid-activated carbon as the catalyst enabled higher LGO production at lower temperatures. Catalytic pyrolysis of waste paper had advantages over traditional materials in terms of LGO yield and production temperature.
