Effect of bypassing the heat transfer fluid on charging in a latent thermal energy storage unit

Seyedmohsen Baghaei Oskouei et al.

Summary: A novel method is proposed to overcome the low thermal conductivity issue of phase change materials (PCMs) in horizontal latent thermal energy storage (LTES) systems. By designing bypassing tubes that redirect the flow of heat transfer fluid to the slowest melting area, the charging time is reduced. The effect of parameters like the lengths, radial distance, and mass flow rate ratio of the bypassing tubes on the charging rate, charging efficiency, and heat transfer is investigated.

Experimental comparative analysis of close-contact and constrained melting of n-eicosane in a finned rectangular cavity

Amir Abdi et al.

Summary: The present study demonstrates and visualizes the two modes of constrained melting and close-contact melting in a rectangular cavity enhanced with fins. Using fins to enhance the process reduces melting time by 49% and 35% in the constrained and close-contact modes, respectively, compared to the unfinned cavity. The thermal performance is observed to be superior in the horizontal and inclined orientations.

Synergistic effects of nano-enhanced phase change material (NePCM) and fin shape on heat storage performance of a finned shell-and-tube unit: An experimental study

Zi-Rui Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that changes in fin shape and nano-additive loading can have complex effects on heat transfer mechanisms during melting in shell-and-tube thermal energy storage units filled with NePCM. The combination of fin shape and GNP loading should be carefully selected to achieve synergistic effects for different application scenarios.

Enhanced power density during energy charging of a shell-and-tube thermal storage unit: Comparison between the inclusion of metal fins and foams

Zi-Rui Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of metal fins and foams on the power density of shell-and-tube phase change thermal energy storage devices. The findings suggest that using fins with the close-contact melting mode can achieve higher power density compared to metal foams. The introduction of metal foams enhances conductivity but suppresses convection, resulting in an initial high power density that decreases gradually during the melting process.

Combined close-contact and convective melting in a vertical cylindrical enclosure

T. Shockner et al.

Summary: The study presents a new numerical model for combined convective and close-contact melting in an axisymmetric cylindrical geometry, and validates it carefully with known benchmarks before conducting numerical simulations to elucidate the melting process under different conditions. The results are then generalized using dimensional analysis, suggesting a correlation for the melt fraction suitable for all cases studied.
