Effect of calcium addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of AZ61-Nd alloy

Zhechao Zhang et al.

Summary: The effects of calcium (Ca) on the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of extruded AZ61-1Nd-xCa (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 2 wt.%) alloys were studied. The addition of calcium increased the volume fraction of Al2Ca precipitates and refined the grain size. The alloys showed consistent tensile strength and increased hardness with increasing calcium content. However, the presence of Al-Nd and brittle Al2Ca phases significantly reduced the elongation. The corrosion resistance of AZ61-1Nd alloy was greatly improved with the addition of 1 wt.% calcium due to the uniformly distributed Al2Ca acting as a physical barrier. The obtained AZ61-1Nd-1Ca alloy with moderate strength and low corrosion rate is considered a candidate material for marine applications.

Effects of solute redistribution during heat treatment on micro-galvanic corrosion behavior of dilute Mg-Al-Ca-Mn alloy

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: The underlying mechanism of solute redistribution during heat treatment in affecting corrosion behavior of Mg-1.19Al-0.28Ca-0.44Mn (wt%) alloy was systematically clarified. The supersaturated Al and Ca solutes in matrix effectively alleviate the driving force of micro-galvanic corrosion caused by Al-Mn phases, based on positive shift of matrix potential and film densification. After aging treatment, monoatomic-layer G.P. zones realize higher strength and better corrosion resistance of alloy as compared to nanosized Al2Ca, due to higher number density and less solute consumption in matrix.

Structure and properties of TiNi shape memory alloy after low-temperature ECAP in shells

R. Karelin et al.

Summary: The effect of low-temperature equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) on the structure formation and mechanical and functional properties of a near-equiatomic titanium nickelide (TiNi) shape memory alloy in shells is studied. ECAP with channel intersection angles of 120° and 110° is conducted at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 330°C after 1 pass. Pure iron is determined as the optimum material for shells as it remains undamaged after ECAP at room temperature. The optimal deformation temperature for ECAP in a shell is found to be 200°C. Deformation at low temperatures leads to the premature destruction of TiNi samples. ECAP of the TiNi core in a shell at 200°C after 1 pass results in the formation of an elongated, banded martensite structure with a bandwidth of approximately 100 nm. The best combination of mechanical and functional properties is achieved after ECAP of a TiNi sample with a diameter of 12 mm in core-shell mode at 200°C, followed by post-deformation annealing at 400°C for 1 hour.

Effects of boron, Hf and Ta content on boride morphology and microstructure of & beta;-solidified & gamma;-TiAl alloys

Kaige Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of boron, Hf, and Ta content on the boride morphology and microstructure of a ?-TiAl alloy were investigated. Increasing boron content leads to a transition in boride morphology from flat to curved. Addition of Hf also causes a transition in boride morphology from flat to curved, while addition of Ta results in smaller borides with dendritic morphology. The combination of solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and grain refinement contributes to the increased hardness of the alloy. The study also suggests that the addition of Ta can refine the size of borides and potentially improve the room temperature properties of the ?-TiAl alloy.

Influence of oxalic acid on the corrosion behavior of AZ91D magnesium alloy in deionized water

Sisi Liu et al.

Summary: Due to its light weight, Mg alloy can be applied to automotive engines and cooling systems to reduce vehicle weight, energy consumption and exhaust pollution. However, ethylene glycol-type coolants can be oxidized into oxalic acid, glyoxylic acid and other substances at high temperature, which can cause the damage of Mg alloy. In this paper, electrochemical methods, hydrogen evolution and surface analysis methods were used to study the influence of oxalic acid on the corrosion behavior of AZ91D magnesium alloy in deionized water. The results indicated that the oxalic acid accelerated the corrosion of Mg alloy, and its corrosion rate increased with the concentration of oxalic acid. However, interestingly, the corrosion rate of Mg alloy in oxalic acid solution slowed as the immersed time lengthened, which could be related to the accumulation of corrosion products and the consumption of hydrogen ions. The main corrosion product of the corrosion of Mg alloy in oxalic acid solution was composed of magnesium oxalate.

Effect of extrusion on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Mg-Zn-Mn-(0,1.5)Sr alloys in Hank's solution

Li Lei et al.

Summary: The microstructure, corrosion behavior, and cytocompatibility of as-cast and extruded Mg-Zn-Mn-(0, 1.5)Sr alloys in Hank's solution were investigated. Extrusion resulted in grain refinement and preferred texture, while distinct features of Sr-free and Sr-containing alloys included an increase in dislocation density and fragmentation of Mg17Sr2, respectively. Extrusion significantly accelerated the corrosion rate of Sr-free alloy, while alloyed Sr eliminated this deterioration process. Sr alloying decreased the corrosion rate and enhanced the cytocompatibility of the extruded Mg-Zn-Mn alloy without affecting the corrosion penetration depth, demonstrating the superiority of Sr alloying for extruded magnesium alloys as implant materials.

The same chemical state of carbon gives rise to two peaks in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

G. Greczynski et al.

Summary: Chemical state analysis in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) relies on assigning well-defined binding energy values to core level electrons originating from atoms in particular bonding configurations. Here, direct evidence is presented for the violation of this paradigm, as the C 1s peak due to C-C/C-H bonded atoms from adventitious carbon (AdC) layers splits into two distinctly different contributions. This finding exposes fundamental problems with the reliability of reported XPS data and suggests discontinuing the use of adventitious carbon in XPS.
