Study on the coordination conduct and kinetic insights within the oxo-vanadate and organic reductive nitrogen and sulfur functionalities during the reduction coupled adsorption processes: Implications in practical applications

Jerosha Ifthikar et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the coordination conduct and kinetic modes for the reduction of vanadium(V) by organic nitrogen and sulfur functionalities in different pH conditions. The diffusion of vanadium(V) is controlled by protonated functional groups such as =NH2+, -SH2+, -C--SH+ and oxo-vanadate speciation. The reduction of vanadium(V) to vanadium(IV) is more efficient with -SH as the sole electron donor. The coordination of vanadium(V)/vanadium(IV) species involves parallel orientation with oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms, revealing a previously unrecognized track. This research proposes a novel tactic for designing an efficient vanadium(V) wastewater treatment system considering water parameters.

New insights into co-adsorption of Cr6+and chlortetracycline by a new fruit peel based biochar composite from water: Behavior and mechanism

Jing-Yi Liang et al.

Summary: Nowadays, the purification of residual heavy metals and antibiotics in water and soil is crucial due to their potential threat to human health. A new fruit peel based biochar composite (FPBC) has been studied for the removal of Cr6+ and chlortetra-cycline (CTC), and it showed excellent performance with removal efficiencies of 97% and 81% within 180 minutes, respectively. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Cr6+ by FPBC were well described by the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, indicating a spontaneous endothermic process. The inhibitory effect of coexisting anions on Cr6+ removal followed a specific order, and the simultaneous removal of Cr6+ and CTC was achieved at low CTC content levels.

Adsorption of sulfamethoxazole on polypyrrole decorated volcanics over a wide pH range: Mechanisms and site energy distribution consideration

Yingxin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior and mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on a volcanic rock mineral adsorbent (VR) with Polypyrrole (PPy) modification. The results showed that pore filling and hydrogen bonding were the main adsorption mechanisms for SMX removal by VR, while electrostatic attraction, pi-pi electron donor-acceptor interaction (pi-pi EDA) and ion exchange explained the adsorption distinction between PPy supported VR (PPy-VR) and VR, indicating the wide pH application potential of the modified sorbent. Additionally, the energy distribution analysis revealed that PPy-VR exhibited a stronger adsorption affinity and energy heterogeneity for SMX due to the introduction of pi-pi EDA and ion exchange. The surface modification method provides a feasible idea for improving the application environment of adsorbents, and the analysis of site energy distribution promotes the understanding of the connection between site energy and adsorption mechanism.

Yingxu Gong et al.

Summary: The combined pollution of surface water by organic and inorganic contaminants is a concerning environmental issue. This study successfully developed sulfonated polyacrylate-divinylbenzene (PADVB) microspheres for the efficient removal of organic pollutants and heavy metal ions from water. The research revealed the multi-mechanism adsorption effects, such as electrostatic attraction and complexation, contributing to the simultaneous adsorption of ATZ and heavy metal ions. These findings expand our understanding of the adsorptive behaviors between organic pollutants and heavy metal ions.
