The relationship between inflammatory biomarkers and cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Saahithh Redddi Patlola et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between Interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-113, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha, and CRP with cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia patients. The meta-analyses results show a significant inverse relationship between cognitive performance and systemic levels of these inflammatory markers. Understanding the connection between inflammation and cognitive decline in schizophrenia patients can have a significant impact on disease progression and quality of life.

Specificity of Psychiatric Polygenic Risk Scores and Their Effects on Associated Risk Phenotypes

Amanda L. Rodrigue et al.

Summary: Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) have limited clinical utility in predicting risk for specific psychiatric disorders due to genetic overlap. This study found minimal genetic overlap between psychiatric disorders and control traits, but substantial overlap between psychiatric disorders and allied phenotypes. Further research is needed to construct PRSs with the necessary specificity for clinical application.

Alteration patterns of peripheral concentrations of cytokines and associated inflammatory proteins in acute and chronic stages of schizophrenia: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Sean Halstead et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to investigate the patterns of alteration in peripheral inflammatory proteins in both acute and chronic stages of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The results showed that the concentrations of certain inflammatory proteins were consistently elevated in individuals with acute and chronic schizophrenia spectrum disorders, compared to healthy controls. These findings contribute to the understanding of the diagnostic and prognostic potential of clinically relevant inflammatory biomarkers in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia

Vassily Trubetskoy et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-stage genome-wide association study was conducted to identify common variants associated with schizophrenia. The results revealed 287 distinct genomic loci and 120 genes likely to be involved in the development of schizophrenia. This research provides valuable insights into the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and offers a resource for further mechanistic studies.

Polygenic risk for schizophrenia as a moderator of associations between childhood trauma and schizotypy

Emiliana Tonini et al.

Summary: Recent research has found a correlation between genetic and environmental risk factors for psychotic disorders and higher levels of schizotypy in the general population. This study aimed to investigate the moderating effect of genetic loading for schizophrenia on the association between childhood trauma severity and schizotypy. The results showed a significant interaction between genetic loading and childhood trauma in relation to interpersonal and disorganised dimensions of schizotypy, as well as the total score. This suggests that trauma may increase the risk for psychosis independently of any genetic vulnerability.

The Role of Cytokines in the Pathogenesis of Schizophrenia

Bartosz Dawidowski et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia may be associated with immune dysfunction, with alterations in cytokine levels, childhood trauma, and disturbances in the gut microbiome potentially influencing its pathomechanism and clinical presentation. Different subtypes of schizophrenia, such as deficit schizophrenia, show variations in peripheral cytokine levels. The narrative review provides a comprehensive presentation of the evidence, utilizing a holistic approach to understand the complex relationships involved.

Summary: The study found that patients with schizophrenia had higher childhood trauma experiences, lower scores in parental bonding and social cognitive abilities, and physical neglect was the strongest predictor of emotion recognition impairments. Additionally, good parenting can mitigate the impact of childhood trauma on emotion recognition.
