Exploring chalcopyrite (bio)leaching mechanisms under thermophilic conditions

Ailton Guilherme Rissoni Toledo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bioleaching of chalcopyrite using microbial consortia under thermophilic conditions. The results indicated that chalcopyrite is initially reduced to chalcocite followed by its dissolution. Microbial activity played a crucial role in lowering the solution potential, allowing the prevalence of the chalcocite mechanism.

Catalytic mechanism of manganese ions and visible light on chalcopyrite bioleaching in the presence of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

Chunxiao Zhao et al.

Summary: The effect and mechanism of manganese ions and visible light on chalcopyrite bioleaching mediated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans were explored in this study. The presence of Mn2+ and visible light was found to improve the leaching rate of chalcopyrite and promote the growth of A. ferrooxidans. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer analysis revealed that Mn2+ promoted the formation of extracellular polymeric substance on the surface of chalcopyrite, changing the morphology of A. ferrooxidans and enhancing bacterial adsorption. UV-vis absorbance spectra indicated that Mn2+ promoted the response of chalcopyrite to visible light and enhanced its catalytic effect on bioleaching. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that Mn2+ and visible light reduced the formation of a passivation layer on chalcopyrite, further promoting bioleaching. Electrochemical results suggested that Mn2+ and visible light improved the electrochemical activity of chalcopyrite, thereby increasing its bioleaching rate.

Combined effect and mechanism of visible light and Ag+ on chalcopyrite bioleaching

Chunxiao Zhao et al.

Summary: The presence of visible light and Ag+ significantly improved the copper extraction in chalcopyrite bioleaching, with specific mechanisms leading to enhanced dissolution rate and charge transfer. Light illumination helped reduce the resistance of the passivation layer and promote the accumulation of Ag2S and Ag-0 on the chalcopyrite surface.

Technological trends, emerging applications and metallurgical strategies in antimony recovery from stibnite

Seydou Dembele et al.

Summary: Developed economies have classified antimony as a critical raw material, with China leading global antimony production. Despite a growing demand and technological advances, antimony is projected to become one of the scarcest metals by 2050. Various extractive metallurgical routes are utilized for stibnite processing, with bio-hydrometallurgy slowly gaining momentum. This review provides insights into antimony production, market trends, research advances, and future perspectives in terms of research and industrial needs.

Effect of chopped light on the dissolution and leaching of chalcopyrite

F. K. Crundwell et al.

Summary: Experimental results indicate that the effect of light on chalcopyrite electrodes is primarily due to their semiconducting properties rather than thermal heating. The study shows that light exposure induces a photocurrent in chalcopyrite electrodes and accelerates the reaction rate.

The impact of light on understanding the mechanism of dissolution and leaching of sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2)

F. K. Crundwell

Summary: This study presents a theoretical framework for understanding the interaction of light with the electronic structure of sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite, and how these factors affect their dissolution rate. The electronic structure of these minerals, particularly the bonding character of the upper valence band, plays a crucial role in determining their color and relative dissolution rate. The theory emphasizes the importance of electron removal from bonding orbitals for dissolution under oxidative conditions.
