Austenite grain boundary segregation and precipitation of boron in low-C steels and their role on the heterogeneous nucleation of ferrite

T. S. Prithiv et al.

Summary: The addition of boron (B) to steels significantly suppresses the austenite to ferrite phase transformation, increasing their hardenability. The mechanisms of B segregation and how exactly B suppresses the ferrite nucleation remain elusive.

Structural evolution during nanostructuring of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel by high-pressure torsion

Jae-Kyung Han et al.

Summary: In this study, structural evolution of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel through post-printing nanostructuring using high-pressure torsion at room temperature was investigated. The formation of a martensite phase and significant strain gradients were observed in the nanostructured austenitic steel. Early stage structural changes were attributed to lattice distortion by excess of dislocations and defects.

Interfacial structure and wear properties of selective laser melted Ti/(TiC plus TiN) composites with high content of reinforcements

Lixia Xi et al.

Summary: This study focused on manufacturing high-fraction ceramic particulate-reinforced titanium matrix composites using selective laser melting, achieving at least three times higher microhardness compared to unreinforced titanium. By externally adding TiC and TiN ceramic particles, a favorable interfacial structure and good manufacturing quality were obtained for the composites.

Significance of grain refinement on micro-mechanical properties and structures of additively-manufactured CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy

Wenrui Zhao et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significance of grain refinement achieved through high-pressure torsion on the mechanical properties and structure of AM CoCrFeNi HEA, demonstrating high strain hardening capability and increased plasticity in the nanostructured HEA, with structural evolution showing decreasing crystallite size, increasing microstrain, and expanding lattice parameter. This provides advantages of nanostructuring for current developments in the AM technology of HEAs.

Anisotropy of Mechanical Properties and Residual Stress in Additively Manufactured 316L Specimens

Alexey Fedorenko et al.

Summary: The study found that 316L stainless steel tensile specimens manufactured using the LPBF process exhibit anisotropy, with vertically built specimens showing significantly lower mechanical properties than horizontally built specimens. This difference may be explained by the influence of residual stress on the mechanical behavior.
