Forecast reconciliation in the temporal hierarchy: Special case of intermittent demand with obsolescence

Kamal Sanguri et al.

Summary: Intermittent demand items are at risk of obsolescence, resulting in a downward trend when observed at reduced frequencies. The existing forecasting methods in this context are limited and do not utilize the information at reduced frequencies. This study proposes a temporal hierarchy framework to efficiently model the decreasing trend of intermittent demand items and investigates optimal reconciliation techniques for the obsolescence scenario.

Modeling repair demand in existence of a nonstationary installed base

Mustafa Hekimoglu et al.

Summary: The life cycles of products involve three phases, namely growth, maturity, and decline. Modeling repair demand in the growth and decline stages is challenging due to nonstationarity. This study proposes stochastic models that capture the dynamics of repair demand in these phases and applies them to inventory control and investment decisions. The findings show that using higher moments of demand leads to cost savings and characterize the optimal investment policy for OEMs in extending product lifetimes.

Intermittent demand forecasting for spare parts: A Critical review

Cerag Pince et al.

Summary: Forecasting spare parts demand has been a challenging issue for many companies, and has received considerable attention over the past fifty years. This paper provides a critical review and quantitative analysis of current literature on spare parts demand forecasting methods, offering detailed insights into when and why particular forecasting methods should be preferred.

The value of installed base information for spare part inventory control

Sarah Van der Auweraer et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the value of different sources of installed base information for spare part demand forecasting and inventory control. The study found that knowing the size of the active installed base is most valuable, especially when the installed base changes over time. Additionally, when using a failure-based prediction model, working with the part age itself is crucial, and logistic regression on machine age can be a valuable alternative when part age information is unavailable.

Intermittency and obsolescence: A Croston method with linear decay

S. D. Prestwich et al.

Summary: Only two forecasting methods, TSB and HES, have been specifically designed for intermittent demand with possible obsolescence. A third method, Exponential Smoothing with Linear Decay, is described in the article which decays linearly to zero and is asymptotically the best method for handling obsolescence, showing good performance in experiments on real and synthetic data.

Intermittent demand forecasting for spare parts in the heavy-duty vehicle industry: a support vector machine model

Peng Jiang et al.

Summary: In the heavy-duty vehicle industry, intermittent demand for spare parts is common and poses challenges to demand forecasting by conventional models. Research shows that an adaptive univariate SVM model has a significant advantage in computation time over other models and can effectively predict intermittent demand.
