Parental Math Input Is Not Uniformly Beneficial for Young Children: The Moderating Role of Inhibitory Control

Alex M. Silver et al.

Summary: This study investigated the moderating role of children's inhibitory control in the association between parental math input and children's math performance. The results showed that high levels of parent number talk were associated with higher math achievement among children with higher inhibitory control. This suggests that not all children benefit equally from parental math input, and interventions promoting math input at home should consider children's cognitive abilities.

Home mathematics environment and math performance of Chilean students in kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3

Maria Ines Susperreguy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relation between home math activities and children's math performance in kindergarten and the first three years of primary school. The results showed that for kindergarten children, the frequency of operational activities reported by mothers was positively correlated with math performance, while the frequency of mapping activities reported by mothers was negatively correlated with performance. However, for children in Grades 1-3, home math activities were not significant unique predictors of math outcomes, whereas the socioeconomic status of children's schools and maternal math fluency predicted their math performance.

A multidimensional examination of math anxiety and engagement on math achievement

Michaela Quintero et al.

Summary: Students with high math anxiety show less cognitive-behavioral and emotional engagement in math classrooms compared to students with low math anxiety, which partially explains the achievement differences among students with different levels of math anxiety. High math anxiety students exhibit avoidance patterns in everyday learning, which may act as a potential mechanism for explaining why they underperform their low math anxiety peers.

Parent Math Anxiety Predicts Early Number Talk

Talia Berkowitz et al.

Summary: The study found that parent math anxiety can predict the amount of number talk children hear at home, independent of family socioeconomic status. Additionally, math anxiety predicts number talk for higher-SES parents but not for lower-SES parents. These relations specifically apply to parents' cardinal number talk, which has been shown to be crucial in children's math development.

Controlling-Supportive Homework Help Partially Explains the Relation between Parents' Math Anxiety and Children's Math Achievement

Fraulein Retanal et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown that parents' high math anxiety can impede children's math learning when helping with homework. This study explored the relationship between parents' math anxiety, their homework-helping styles, and children's math achievement. The findings suggest that a controlling-supportive style of homework-helping may mediate the negative impact of parents' math anxiety on their children's math learning.

Home Numeracy and Preschool Children's Mathematical Development: Expanding Home Numeracy Models to Include Parental Attitudes and Emotions

Ann Dowker

Summary: Most studies suggest that home numeracy is correlated with preschool children's current mathematical performance and predicts their mathematical development longitudinally, although some studies have found discrepancies in this relationship. Factors contributing to these discrepancies may include the nature of numeracy activities provided and the reliability of parental reports. Additionally, parental attitudes and beliefs play a role, potentially influencing the provision and transmission of home numeracy activities.

Math Gives Me a Tummy Ache! Mathematics Anxiety in Kindergarten

Yaheng Lu et al.

Summary: The study constructed and validated a Math Anxiety Scale for kindergarten students, finding associations between math anxiety and math achievement, self-perception, interest in math, and need for support in math learning. Results showed that children with negative feelings towards math tests were more likely to exhibit math anxiety, especially in terms of worry and somatization.
